Adult Services Librarian (Programming and Marketing)
SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Adult Services, the Adult Services Librarian interprets user needs; helps in materials selection; and provides reference, readers' advisory, referral services and assistance with technology to patrons. In addition, this individual may be assigned primary responsibility for the department's programming, marketing, interlibrary loan, special collection, makerspace, library or things, or other initiatives as they arise.
The Adult Services Librarian serves as a member of the Library's professional staff, making recommendations for policies, procedures, and services, and seeking budgetary support for the department. The Adult Services Librarian is assigned a schedule including evenings and weekends as necessary for appropriate delivery of public services. The position requires the use of independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation, and communication skills.
of Essential Job Functions
- Provides a full range of information services to the public, including reference, reader’s/media advisory, assistance with library technology and online resources, and other public services as needed, in person, by phone, and online, while ensuring that each library user receives the highest possible standard of customer service.
- Develops and conducts programming for library users. Administers multiple programs per week for which objectives and general procedures have been established or outlined.
- Maintains a programming budget. Negotiates with presenters, writes contract, collects invoices and w9s and works with the Business Office to coordinate payment.
- Works with community to schedule, plan and install exhibits in display cases and galleries throughout the Library.
- Works in conjunction with the Children’s and Young Adult department to plan and implement an annual summer reading program.
- Develops, weeds, and maintains print, electronic, and multimedia collections within budgetary guidelines.
- Fosters a love of reading through engaging displays, curated lists, and reader's advisory assistance.
- Advertises for programs using print and electronic means. Prepares posters and graphics using computer design programs. Writes program descriptions, creates graphics and other marketing materials as necessary.
- Post on social networks maintained by the Library in order to help promote Library programs and services.
- Consults with and plans programs with librarians from other local public libraries.
- Attends statewide and regional library programs relating to adult services sponsored by the Connecticut State Library, the Connecticut Library Consortium, the Connecticut Library Association and other agencies.
- Plans for and develops outreach programs.
- Recruits and supervises volunteers.
- Gathers statistics on programming, reference questions, makerspace usage, and more as needed. Uses statistics and patron feedback to evaluate decisions surrounding collection development and programming.
- Provides feedback to section head on policies, procedures, and long-term planning for the department.
- Receives oral or written instructions from supervisor.
- Organizes work according to established procedures.
- Performs clerical or technical tasks in various units as assigned.
