Public Works Mechanic

The Town of East Hartford is seeking a Public Works Mechanic. This position performs skilled mechanical work involving the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of Town-owned vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include servicing diesel and gasoline-powered automobiles, trucks, heavy and light equipment, small engines, and various related mechanical systems. The role requires strong technical expertise, excellent diagnostic skills, and a commitment to ensuring safe, reliable equipment that supports all Town operations.

• Receive oral instructions or written work orders from the Supervisor.
  • Plan and organize repair procedures using manuals, charts, and prior experience.
  • Operate vehicles or equipment, consult with operators about performance issues, and use lifts or jacks to inspect, test, and determine causes of malfunctions.
  • Utilize mechanical hand tools and power equipment to remove, disassemble, repair, rebuild, or replace defective parts and components.
  • Perform engine and transmission overhauls, electrical system repairs and rewiring, brake system repairs, clutch replacements, and other mechanical work as needed.
  • Diagnose major engine and transmission problems and prepare vehicles or equipment for outside repair services when necessary.
  • Conduct emissions inspections and perform required upgrades.
  • Repair damaged vehicle bodies, body parts, and auxiliary equipment using hand and power tools.
  • Repair damaged structural members and perform minor welding as required.
  • Grind, file, and sand repaired surfaces using appropriate tools.
  • Install safety and emergency equipment on Town vehicles.
  • Perform routine maintenance, including tune-ups, tire changes, and wheel balancing.
  • Follow all standard safety procedures, policies, and regulations.
  • Complete work orders and submit them to the Supervisor upon finishing repairs.
• Additional Duties
  • Repair and maintain power mowers, snow blowers, and other small mechanical equipment.
  • Install various attachments onto vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate Town equipment and perform general maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Recommend and prepare vehicles and equipment for repair by external service providers.
• Supervision Received
  • Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Services Foreman.

The required skills and knowledge are typically gained through completion of a vocational or technical school program in automotive repair (or an equivalent combination of training and experience), along with four years of experience as a mechanic, including completion of a diesel engine repair program.

• Thorough knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of motor vehicles, heavy construction equipment, and related mechanical systems.
• Comprehensive understanding of hydraulic and electrical systems.
• Skill in diagnosing and servicing automotive, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
• Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, specifications, and equipment manuals.
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25–50 pounds, with occasional requirements to lift heavier items.
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Formal training or certification in automotive or diesel repair preferred
• Experience in mechanical repair of trucks, heavy equipment, or municipal vehicles preferred
• Valid Connecticut driver's license; LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Class II Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
