We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.
Job Description :As Specialist Socio-Economic Development (SED) your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
Safety, Health, and Environment:- Ensure all socio-economic development programmes and projects comply with SHE standards and risk management protocols.
- Integrate SHE principles into project planning and execution to safeguard community and employee well being.
- Design and implement outcomes-based programmes that unlock community and social benefits, aligned with organisational sustainability priorities.
- Provide expert advice on impact-based approaches to programme development and delivery, tailored to local and regional contexts.
- Manage delivery against agreements and service-level commitments, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
- Engage with partners and stakeholders to integrate subject matter expertise into programme design and implementation.
- Ensure alignment with related programmes and projects beyond the immediate socio-economic development pipeline.
- Support implementation of Monitoring & Evaluation frameworks to track impact and performance.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders and delivery partners.
- Monitor adherence to socio-economic development criteria, ethical business requirements, and relevant policies and standards.
- Liaise with Finance, Governance, and Supply Chain teams to coordinate agreements, contracts, invoices, and timely payments.
This role is in Corporate Affairs (COR) department on a Band 6 (D
-Upper) level reporting to the Manager Corporate Affairs.
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Bachelor’s in Social Science / Development Economics or a relevant alternative on NQF7
- Project Management Certificate
- Social Impact Assessment / Social Management Certificate (advantages)
- SA Driver’s License
- 6–8 years of professional experience in socio-economic development (SED), preferably within the mining, energy, or related industries.
- In-depth understanding of socio-economic development models and programmes that support improvements in community well-being, including enterprise development, skills development, infrastructure, and social investment initiatives.
- Applied understanding of Social and Labour Plan delivery system
- Familiarity with national development policies, community development frameworks, and regulatory environments affecting socio-economic programmes.
- Strong grasp of programme design, implementation, and delivery models tailored to underserved communities, with the ability to adapt to local and regional contexts.
- Applied understanding of M&E frameworks and methodologies to assess programme effectiveness, impact, and alignment with strategic objectives.
- Knowledge of ethical business practices, corporate social responsibility standards, and compliance requirements relevant to socio-economic development.
- Ability to manage stakeholder dynamics and relationships across internal and external partners, including communities, NGOs, government entities, and private sector organisations.
