They're comfortable picking up the phone to chase an overdue account, they know their way around Xero, and they bring a methodical approach to everything they touch.
Job SpecAbout the role Finovate is a Somerset West‑based fractional finance firm that partners with founder‑led SA and UK SMEs to deliver strategic financial leadership. They are looking for a Bookkeeper to join their internal finance team – owning the debtors and creditors functions, supporting billing and invoicing, and keeping the financial admin of the business running accurately and on time. This is not a dead‑end admin role.
It is a permanent position with a deliberate growth path built in, designed for someone who wants to develop into a broader accounting role over time inside a firm that will actively support that journey. You will be a core member of Finovate's internal finance team, reporting directly to the Financial Controller. The role is structured to grow – starting with debtors, creditors and billing, expanding into month‑end processing and management account support as you develop.
you'll be doing
- Owning the full debtors function, including tracking outstanding invoices and following up on overdue accounts via phone and e‑mail
- Preparing and issuing client invoices in Xero, ensuring accuracy against work completed and SLA agreements
- Setting up and maintaining client debit order mandates for monthly collections
- Allocating and reconciling incoming payments against debtor accounts within agreed timelines
- Processing supplier invoices in Dext and Xero with correct coding and timely payment
- Performing bank statement processing, transaction matching and monthly bank reconciliations
- Maintaining an accurate aged payables list and reconciling supplier statements in Xero
- Acting as first point of contact for internal and client‑facing billing and invoice queries
- Escalating unresolved or complex queries to the Financial Controller with full context and documentation
The technical baseline is Xero proficiency and 1 to 3 years of relevant experience. Beyond that, Finovate is looking for someone who takes ownership, communicates with confidence, and is genuinely motivated to grow.
- Grade 12 essential;
Diploma or Certificate in Bookkeeping, Accounting or Finance preferred - 1 to 3 years of experience in bookkeeping, accounts or financial administration
- Xero proficiency essential – Dext familiarity advantageous
- Strong Excel skills and a methodical approach to record‑keeping
- Confident and professional telephone manner – comfortable calling clients to follow up on outstanding accounts
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Comfortable using AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT to support day‑to‑day efficiency
- A collaborative team player who works well across departments
