Department: Nursing

Job Title: NEDP Nurse

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: NEDP Director and District Wellness Coordinator/Nurse Leader

General Description (1-3 lines describing role)

The NEDP nurse addresses and promotes the physical, mental, emotional and social well‑being of students and the school community in the after‑school program. The NEDP nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention and follow‑up for all children within the after‑school program.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts, per the Board of Registration
  • Minimum Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum two (2) years supervised nursing experience
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Provider certification
  • Valid MA DESE Professional Support Personnel license

  • Previous pediatric nursing experience
  • Familiarity with Health Office Anywhere (Electronic Health Record) documentation
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts school health standards, rules and regulations
Essential

Job Duties (not limited to)

Using sound clinical knowledge and judgment, adhering to the Nurse Practice Act, pertinent regulations governing nursing practice in Massachusetts, the guidelines and standards of care established by the MDOP and MDESE, and in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough, the school nurse routinely performs the following duties:

  • Provides skilled nursing care for students and staff
  • Performs health screenings
  • Coordinates referrals to private healthcare providers
  • Serves as a liaison between school personnel, families, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy and safe school environment

The job responsibilities of a school nurse include but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate plans for student care
  • Provide a nurturing, welcoming, trusting, and safe atmosphere
  • Serve as a consultant with other school professionals
  • Provide health‑related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings
  • Collaborate with staff and administration to ensure a healthy and safe school environment
  • Monitor immunizations, manage communicable diseases, and assess the school environment to prevent injury and ensure safety
  • Oversee infection control measures
  • Actively participate in school safety plans addressing school violence, bullying, and emergencies
  • Oversee medication administration, health care procedures, and development of health care plans
  • Make decisions related to delegating health‑care tasks as directed by district policies, state laws and professional practice guidance
  • Maintain confidential, up‑to‑date cumulative health records on all students
  • Consult with Wellness Coordinator/Nurse Leader, health department, and/or school physician when appropriate
  • Provide staff training as needed
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements

Work Environment: Generally performed in a school environment during the school day, with occasional after‑school meetings.

Physical Requirements: The nurse frequently walks, stands, sits, talks, hears, bends, stoops, crouches and/or kneels; occasionally lifts or moves objects up to 25 pounds; must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
