CNC Machinist

This role is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating multiple machining areas—including turning, milling, and tooling—to produce precision metal parts to exact specifications in a manufacturing environment. You will work from basic and complex blueprints and engineering documentation, perform independent tool changes and adjustments, inspect parts during production, and contribute to continuous improvement and training within the machining department.

Responsibilities:

  • Program, set up, and operate CNC and manual equipment across multiple machining areas such as turning, milling, and tooling to produce precision metal parts according to production specifications.
  • Read, interpret, and follow basic and complex blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, and written instructions or procedures to accurately machine parts from print to finished product.
  • Perform tool changes, offsets, and compensations independently to maintain part quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Operate one or more machines efficiently and safely, maintaining consistent throughput and minimizing downtime.
  • Inspect and verify part features during production in accordance with Quality Inspection Plans (QIPs), using appropriate measurement devices, tooling, and gauges.
  • Support training efforts on machining products, processes, and equipment within the machining department by sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Provide input on new product processing, including manufacturability feedback, and troubleshoot machining and process issues as they arise.
  • Achieve applied and earned production rates to established standards, meeting or exceeding departmental performance goals.
  • Complete preventive maintenance requirements on CNC equipment to ensure reliability and optimal machine performance.
  • Document actions by accurately completing required production documentation and performing ERP transactions in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to team efforts by collaborating with colleagues and working toward departmental goals and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, and by cleaning equipment and work areas before, during, and after shifts.
  • Consistently adhere to all safety equipment requirements within production areas, including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and safety shoes at all times.
  • Comply with EHS, Right to Know, and RECRA requirements and participate in safety and environmental programs as needed.
  • Perform other machining and related duties as assigned to support production and departmental needs.

Essential

Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with machine setups, with strong CNC programming experience using CAD software strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical with a solid machining foundation, including hands-on experience in a machine shop environment.
  • Proficiency in programming, setup, and operation of most shop equipment, including lathes, mills, and general machining equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications, and translate them into accurate machining operations.
  • Good working knowledge of measurement devices, tooling, and gauges, including micrometers and other precision instruments.
  • Good understanding of quality control principles and in-process inspection methods.
  • Good working knowledge of machine shop mathematics and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to machine parts independently from print to finished product with minimal supervision.
  • Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity for precise machining operations.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members and documenting work.
  • Basic computer navigation and utilization skills for ERP transactions and programming interfaces.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Skills &

Qualifications:

  • Additional related technical or vocational training and machining certifications are preferred.
  • Experience with one or more of the following machines, controls, and programming software:
    Mastercam, Mazak, Mazatrol, Robodrill, Fanuc, HAAS, Citizen, and similar CNC platforms.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on CNC equipment.
  • Ability to support training efforts by mentoring others on machining processes and equipment.
  • Good collaboration skills and willingness to contribute to team and departmental goals.
