Job Description

Provide security for the safety and protection of hospital patients, staff, the general public, and properties. Patrol buildings and grounds of the hospital, examining doors, windows, and other points of entry to ensure they are secure. Record and tag all unsecured points. Warn violators of infractions such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and apprehend or expel persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts in accordance with applicable laws.

Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked. Observe departing personnel to guard against theft of hospital property, record data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and other suspicious acts. Assist local authorities with investigations of incidents committed on hospital properties, report all criminal acts to the appropriate security leadership or local authorities, and assist hospital staff as required to provide protection and safety to patients or other individuals.

Adhere to all general orders and special orders as directed.

Major Responsibilities
  • Participate in the hospital emergency room programs.
  • Effectively deal with a wide range of public safety issues in changing situations.
  • Interpret and understand written and oral instructions.
  • Apply common sense understanding to instructions furnished by written document, oral command or diagram.
  • Cooperate with law enforcement agencies in accordance with the hospital’s legal obligation to protect the rights and privileges of its patients pursuant to federal and state laws.

Position Qualifications License, Certification, Education (Required)
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Obtain and satisfactorily complete the initial 8‑hour hospital orientation program and annual competency reviews and any other training as may be occasionally mandated.
  • Obtain and satisfactorily complete annual (or biannual as applicable) re‑certifications in CPR, fit testing for tuberculosis respirator masks, hazard communication program, annual fire suppression and hazard recognition training, annual self‑defense and management of violent situations training, annual training and physical completion for the emergency response team, and other training as may be determined by the supervisor of public safety.
  • Avade 2 (restraint) training completion required within 6 months of hire.
Experience / Skills (Required)
  • Three years of related experience and/or training in public safety.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility may be considered.
