This position is classified as an essential employee who performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks with the objective of maintaining the Town’s Street infrastructure, storm water, sidewalks, and street signage for the safe and appealing enjoyment of the community. These tasks require the use of manual tools, powered hand tools and light-heavy mechanical equipment generally associated with street infrastructure maintenance within the Towns corporate city limits.

Annual Salary Range: $34,104.49-$51,156.73

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES TECH I (Grade 14)
  • Must be able to safely operate, care for and maintain a variety of hand tools and light power equipment such as rakes, shovels, trimmers, edger’s, blowers, tamps, saws, etc.
  • Must be able to safely operate small tractors, and small work trucks (sometimes with trailers).
  • May be required to apply pre-mixed pesticides and herbicides following proper application and preventive safety instructions.
  • Performs or assists in the maintenance to include asphalt crack pouring, pothole repair, leveling, grinding, new pavement installs and pavement markings as needed.
  • Performs or assists in the maintenance to include concrete sidewalk repairs/installations, concrete curb repairs/installs, concrete pad repairs/installs and concrete grinding of any trip hazards.
  • Performs or assists with repairs and installs of storm drain lines by cutting pipes, proper connections, laying pipe, manholes, catch basins, and manual digging and tamping.
  • Performs or assists in trench excavations, establishing protective barriers, guides heavy equipment.
  • Must maintain and utilize appropriate and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow all safety procedures at all times.
  • Must have good communication skills and be able to interact positively with both the public and co-workers.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of manual tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets in regard to. Digging out holes with manual and automatic digging tools; operates a compactor; operates street maintenance equipment.
  • Performs or assist with cutting trees and bushes posing a hazard to roadways with manual and automatic cutting tools.
  • Majority of work assignments are repetitive in nature and once learned can be completed without difficulty under general supervision.
  • Must be able to work with some independence and to utilize skills which require substantial on the job training.
  • Work is reviewed by superiors to determine that proper work methods are being followed and that instructions are being carried out correctly.
  • The public contact requirement with the Street division and job hazards are significant classification factors, as well as inner departmental relationships.
  • Must be able to understand catalogues, manuals and manufactures instructions, for tools and equipment.
  • The potential for on-the-job accidents and injuries for this class of employee is significant; therefore, the ability to follow safety procedures is a job requirement.
  • May assist with a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks with other Public Works Departments when needed.
  • Performs and assists in the cleaning and unclogging of storm drain culverts and catch basins.
  • Cleans vehicles, equipment, and tools; as well as the shop and work sites when needed.
