A great UHY client is seeking a Senior Payroll Accountant
. The ideal candidate will have 4+years of accounting/payroll accounting experience, advanced Excel skills, and strong month-end close and accrual experience.

The Senior Payroll Accountant role is a hybrid position with 2 days a week onsite. This is a direct hire position.

Senior Payroll Accountant Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain accurate, complete, and timely payroll accounting calculations, reconciliations, and supporting records in accordance with GAAP, accounting policies, and internal controls.
  • Prepare and review complex journal entries and supporting schedules, including compensation expense, bonus accruals, benefit accounting, payroll allocations, intercompany transactions, and reclassifications.
  • Lead payroll and benefit-related month-end close activities, including reconciliations, variance analysis, issue resolution, and reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze payroll-related accruals and ensure appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Analyze payroll and financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities and communicate actionable recommendations to leadership.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on payroll accounting processes and provide guidance to internal stakeholders regarding accounting treatment, payroll impacts, and reporting requirements.
  • Partner with Payroll, HR, Finance, FP&A, and external vendors on operational and strategic initiatives.
  • Translate complex accounting and payroll concepts into clear business insights for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Drive process improvements focused on automation, scalability, internal controls, and efficiency.
  • Support the implementation, enhancement, and optimization of payroll and accounting systems, reporting tools, and workflows.
  • Monitor changes in payroll regulations, accounting guidance, and compliance requirements and update processes accordingly.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for key processes, controls, methodologies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Manage multiple projects and competing deadlines while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate leadership through ownership, problem solving, continuous improvement, and collaboration across the accounting organization.

Senior Payroll Accountant Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and/or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation.
  • Minimum of 4+ years of progressive experience in accounting, payroll accounting, audit, or related financial functions.
  • Strong experience with month-end close processes and accrual accounting.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including large datasets, complex formulas, reconciliations, and financial data analysis.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, GAAP, journal entries, accrual methodologies, reconciliations, and financial controls.
  • Experience with Dayforce, Workday, or other payroll, ERP, and financial reporting systems is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify process improvement opportunities and implement practical, scalable solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to handle confidential payroll and financial information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Proven ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and drive results with limited supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and consistently meet deadlines.
