Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, maintain a secure and orderly environment and protection of the grounds and off‑site buildings for Corewell Health, to include safety of all employees, visitors, and patients. May require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification and will be able to arrest for misdemeanors offenses and must complete the Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements.
Responsibilities- Patrol campus on foot, in vehicle, or on bike as assigned.
- Unlock doors and provide motor assistance outside.
- Observe suspicious activities and security violations.
- Perform duties at assigned post and assist patients, visitors, and employees.
- Enforce hospital rules, regulations, and policies.
- Assist in the Security Operations Center monitoring phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic.
- Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management.
- Complete daily reports or logs on all activities, irregularities, and investigations; log all calls and lost articles.
- Send reports to managers and executives.
- Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and off‑site locations, prepare reports, and evaluate pertinent data and documentation.
- Cooperate with law enforcement on complaints.
- Provide security escorts and other assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as warranted.
- Respond to routine inquiries, direct visitors to appropriate areas, and prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Use proactive non‑violent verbal de‑escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors without escalating the event into a violent incident.
- Assist nursing staff with physical management/ restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
- Use defensive tactics and approved MCOLES force continuum to safeguard lives and well‑being of staff, patients, and visitors when necessary.
- Possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons as determined by Corewell Health policy.
- Provide CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) or first aid in the event of a medical emergency on the grounds or in public areas until trained medical staff arrive from the Emergency Department or Local Fire Department as per EMTALA law.
- Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing of PAPR’s/Tyvek suits and providing security and order in the decontamination area.
- Report and respond to incidents of fire and/or safety hazards.
- Inspect firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; assist with regularly scheduled fire, disaster, and other emergency drills.
- Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
- At locations where PA 330 is in place, utilize Police Authority to arrest for both felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health Property under Michigan Law (PA 330) and to write citations/tickets and enforce ordinances under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local city ordinances.
- High school diploma or equivalent; minimum of two to three years of law‑enforcement related work experience as a police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police.
- Ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or other dangerous incidents.
- Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use – requires approval and authorization by the Director; current Carry Pistol License (CPL) and successful completion of the specialized Taser Training Course.
- Driver’s License – State of Michigan (LIC).
- Upon hire: CRT‑Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA (American Heart Association) (90 days), CRT‑Automated External Defibrillator (AED) – unknown (90 days), CRT‑First Aid – AHA (American Heart Association) (90 days).
- Preferred:
Graduation from a state‑regulated Police Academy. May consider other experiences related to crowd control and security.
