Job Description

Job Goal:
Develop and provide specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, evaluate and assess student progress against instructional objectives, and function as liaison for the development of the IEPs for assigned students.

Supervision:
Reports to the Building Principal and Director of Student Services.

Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:

Required: Department of Education Certification as a Special Education Teacher.

Preferred: Five plus years of prior work experience as a Special Education Teacher.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Develops and delivers specialized instruction to students with disabilities in a substantially separate setting and as push-in to full inclusion as needed for students on caseload.
  • Provides research‑based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Employs a variety of assistive technology tools to help students access the curriculum.
  • Implement Behavior Intervention Plans and work with Behavior Specialist/School Adjustment Counselor on class wide interventions.
  • Functions as a liaison, coordinating the instruction and related services to assigned students.
  • Develops and implements annual IEP plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Adheres to procedural requirements, including due process timelines.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Serves as primary contact for the parent.
  • Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities by communicating expectations of appropriate behavior.
  • Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
  • Provides instructional direction to paraprofessional support staff: assigns activities, provides guidance and instructional oversight.
  • Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers, etc.) regarding the needs of students.
  • Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Provides professional expertise and assistance to individuals, other district staff and the community concerning areas of instructional expertise/knowledge.
  • Attends training sessions, conferences, seminars, district and departmental meetings.
  • Keeps abreast of changing developments, trends, instructional and educational technologies.
  • Any other related duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal and/or Director of Student Services.
  • Physical Requirements

    The position requires moderate walking, standing, sitting, and climbing stairs or step stool as necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis and over 20 pounds occasionally. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines.
