Position Hours And Pay

7 hours per day for 4 days for the first year and 2 days each year following until certification is completed.

6.5 hours per day at 178 days per year.

Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $24.76 (25-26 PSE SALARY SCHEDULE).

Your hire date with the Bethel School District is based on School Board approval. This date depends on multiple factors and may change without notice. Please contact HR with any questions.

Required Training

Person hired for this position must complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of hire.

  • Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Para educator Certificate of the state mandated Para educator Certificate Program per State requirements.
Federal Minimum Employment Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Hold high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • One of the following:
  • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment.
  • AA degree or higher.
  • Earned seventy‑two (72) quarter credits or forty‑eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.
  • Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.
Job Summary

This position’s responsibilities are to assist certificated staff with instructional and non‑instructional activities for non‑mainstreamed special education students, generally in a self‑contained classroom. Responsibilities include instructing students individually or in small groups, assisting with basic life skills, supervising student behavior activities, and providing support for toileting, personal hygiene, feeding, and interpersonal skill development.

Duties
  • Instruct moderately to severely handicapped students individually or in small groups to promote understanding of materials presented.
  • Communicate with certificated staff concerning individual student progress and adjust methods to meet diverse student needs.
  • Assist certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments and other records for assessment of student progress.
  • Attend to student physical and safety needs; monitor for medical risks such as seizures and behaviors that may result in harm.
  • Assist students with toileting, personal hygiene, and basic living skills.
  • Assist in social skill acquisition and provide feeding assistance.
  • Provide physical assistance to students and work with adaptive equipment.
  • Monitor need for first aid and refer for treatment as appropriate.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of classroom equipment.
Other Functions
  • Alert qualified district staff to student problems.
  • Locate, prepare, modify materials for student use under direction of certificated staff.
  • Prepare, duplicate, collate, and distribute materials; operate office equipment.
  • Maintain physical appearance of classroom and other areas and store therapeutic equipment.
  • Serve on district committees and departmental work teams as needed.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the position scope.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the school principal or assigned administrator; receives guidance from certificated staff.

Mental Demands

May experience frequent interruptions and must deal with a wide range of student behaviors, academic abilities, and physical or emotional disabilities.

Physical Demands

Potential exposure to infectious diseases carried by students, student noise, lifting and positioning students, working extended periods, dealing with personal hygiene, biting behavior, and outdoor supervision in inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, with experience working with school‑age children and special needs students preferred. For Title One positions an associate degree, proof of completion of Washington State Para educator Assessment, or two years of higher education required.
