Position: CTE - Career Counselor (.5 FTE)

This posting is for a .5 FTE position. The Career Counselor assists students in understanding their choices for post secondary education and career training; maintains liaisons with community leaders and businesses; provides information and/or direction to students, parents, teachers, and administrators about career and educational services available to eligible students; develops and monitors program data and reports; and promotes programs with students, staff and parents.

Essential

Functions
  • Coordinates a variety of events and programs (e.g. student assessments, classroom presentations, career fairs, college visits) for the purpose of supporting the smooth transition from middle school to high school to post‑secondary training and/or employment.
  • Maintains liaisons with post‑secondary institutions, employers, community leaders and organizations for the purpose of building resources and expanding program opportunities for eligible students.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees (e.g. community organization, district in‑service) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable of program guidelines.
  • Prepares students for later educational experiences by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Counsels individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral problems affecting their educational or vocational possibilities.
  • Confers with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other professionals to discuss student’s progress, and to assist in defining priorities for students and their resource needs.
  • Oversees work‑based learning students for the purpose of connecting acquired knowledge and skills to employment opportunities.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by supervisor.
Reporting Relationships

Director of Career and College Readiness; or may be designated as building administration.

Conditions

May be required to deal with distressed students/parents; may be exposed to infectious diseases.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S./B.A degree (Secondary Teacher Preparation program).
  • Previous successful teaching and/or counseling experience at secondary level preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Must have knowledge of and/or become familiar with college and university programs. Must possess knowledge and understanding of Common Core State Standards, as well as the Washington State graduation requirements. Must possess strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Must have demonstrated ability to offer career guidance to students. Must have demonstrated ability to successfully employ effective teaching and presentation methods. Must have a demonstrated ability to use a variety of instructional strategies and methods appropriate for student learning needs, and an understanding of and experience with career exploration software (e.g., Career Cruising).

Must have the ability to work and communicate effectively with staff, students and parents from diverse cultural backgrounds. Must possess effective problem solving abilities and critical thinking skills, and be able to organize ideas, time and materials. Must have demonstrated ability to accomplish goals independently or as a member of a team, and willingness to plan and work with other staff members through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

Licenses/Special Requirements

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Washington State ESA or Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificate with endorsements in office procedures, work‑based learning, and computer applications or related prior to the first day of employment. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
