Position: Para educator - SPED / Developmentally Responsive Kindergarten (DRK)

THIS POSITION IS FOR 6.5 HOURS PER DAY 178 DAYS PER YEAR. 7 hours per day for 4 days for the first year and 2 days each year afterward until certification is completed. PAY FOR POSITION: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $24.76 (25-26 PSE SALARY SCHEDULE).

Required Training
  • Complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of hire.
  • Successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and obtain General Para educator Certificate per state mandated Para educator Certificate Program.
  • Meet federal minimum employment requirements:
    • Be at least 18 years of age.
    • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • One of:
      Pass ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment; hold an AA degree or higher; earn 72 quarter credits / 48 semester credits at an accredited institution; complete a registered apprenticeship program offered by Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries; or complete The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.
General Summary

This position's responsibilities are to assist certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for students with disabilities in an integrated Kindergarten classroom, including instructing students individually or in small groups, assisting with basic life skills, and supervising student behavior activities.

Essential Functions
  • Instruct students with disabilities individually or in small groups on a variety of learning activities to promote understanding of materials. Provides encouragement, reinforcement, and achievement of educational objectives defined by certificated staff.
  • Communicate with certificated staff regarding individual student progress; adjust methods to meet diverse student needs; consult on remediation or enrichment.
  • Assist certificated staff with maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments and other documentation for student progress assessment.
  • Attend to students' physical and safety needs; monitor for medical risks such as seizures; correct behaviors and maintain discipline per policies and procedures.
  • Assist students with toileting and personal hygiene, including catheterization, diapering, washing, brushing, and showering.
  • Help students with interpersonal and personal skill mastery; feed students and teach social aspects of eating with others.
  • Assist with basic living skills and pre-vocational activities; support communication skills development; facilitate integration with peers when possible.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, staff and parents concerning progress, safety, and community relations.
  • Provide physical assistance such as lifting or positioning; use adaptive equipment for communication; follow and document procedures established by physical therapist.
  • Monitor need for first aid and refer for treatment as appropriate; maintain cleanliness and hygiene of classroom and equipment; wash dishes, disinfect surfaces, wash and dry clothes, towels, washcloths, and bibs.
Other Functions
  • Alert qualified district staff to student problems.
  • Locate, prepare and modify materials for student use, enrichment activities and special projects under direction of certificated staff.
  • Prepare, duplicate, collate and distribute materials; operate office equipment.
  • Maintain physical appearance of classroom and other assigned areas; store therapeutic and other equipment as assigned; manage supplies.
  • May serve on various district committees or departmental work teams; model appropriate behavior and protect confidential information per district guidelines.
  • Perform related duties consistent with scope and intent of the position.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the school principal or assigned administrator; receives guidance from certificated staff.

Mental Demands

May experience frequent interruptions; required to handle a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities; deal with diverse physical or emotional disabilities; may occasionally encounter distraught or difficult students.

Physical Demands

Potential exposure to infectious diseases; noise levels; lift and position students and special equipment such as wheelchairs; lift five to ten pounds; work in non-routine positions for extended periods; attend to students' personal hygiene; handle biting behavior; prevent exposure to bodily fluids; outdoors in inclement weather during playground supervision.

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to work with school-age children and special needs students preferred.
