Position Hours and Pay

This position is for 6.75 hours per day at 146 days per year, 7 hours per day for 4 days for the first year, and 2 days each year following until certification is completed.

Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $24.76 (25-26 PSE Salary Schedule)

Official Hire Date — Your hire date with the Bethel School District is based on School Board approval and may change without notice. Please contact HR with any questions.

Required Training — Must complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of hire and renew annually.

Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and Para educator Certificate — Must successfully complete the state mandated Para educator Certificate Program. This program is dependent upon State funding.

Must provide TB (tuberculosis) test proof prior to official hire. MMR vaccine is required.

Applicants must meet the following federal minimum employment requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent and one of the following:
    • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment
    • AA degree or higher
    • Earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution
    • Completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries
    • Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program
Responsibilities

This position's responsibilities are to assist certificated staff in a variety of activities for preschool special education students, including individual or small group instruction and supervising student behavior and activities as assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Provide instruction and assistance to special‑needs preschool students ages 3‑5 in a partially self‑contained/partially integrated program. Work with students individually or in small groups to promote understanding of learning materials, provide encouragement, reinforcement, and achievement of educational objectives defined by certificated staff.
  • Communicate with instructors and program specialists concerning individual student progress and adjust instruction methods as needed. Assist professional staff in implementing a targeted program.
  • Keep students focused on specific tasks, supervise behavior in the classroom, playground, bus area, field trips, washrooms, and other sites; accompany students during specialist activities; correct behaviors, maintain discipline according to policies, and instruct students in behavioral rules and codes.
  • Assist students with interpersonal and personal skills mastery.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with students, staff, and parents regarding student progress, safety, and community relations; assist parents and volunteers in program activities.
  • Provide assistance to physically handicapped students, including lifting, positioning, and personal hygiene support.
  • Maintain students’ physical safety; assist with bus entry/exit, wheelchair mobility, toileting, diapering, and personal care; monitor need for first aid and refer for treatment; track and dispense authorized medication.
  • Prepare and set up snacks and lunches; order snack items and paper products; teach basic food preparation skills; assist children with eating and associated social behaviors; clean up after meals; disinfect tables and counters.
  • Assist students with self‑help skills such as putting on and removing clothes, eating properly, using the toilet, and other personal safety and hygiene tasks.
  • Assist students with physical movement and exercise following a specific therapist‑developed regimen.
  • Accompany instructors when visiting students in their home settings; assist in documenting visits and recording observations.
