Position Hours and Pay

This position is for 6.5 hours per day over 178 days per year. The director may adjust to 7 hours per day for 4 days during the first year, and 2 days each year thereafter, until certification is completed.

Position pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 – $24.76 (25‑26 PSE Salary Schedule).

Job Description

This position’s responsibilities are to assist teacher(s) and student(s) in Multilingual Education (MLE) programs with instructional and non‑instructional activities. Responsibilities include small‑group instruction, one‑on‑one instruction, preparing materials for lessons, teaming, collaboration between general‑education and special‑education staff, and assisting with testing students for program eligibility.

Essential Functions
  • Support student language development individually or in small groups in a variety of subjects and learning activities; promote student understanding of materials presented and communicate with teachers concerning individual progress and instructional strategies.
  • Support students in assigned academic subjects, social skills, and cultural differences; modify materials for student use initiated by the teacher or related staff personnel, provide guidance and motivation, facilitate mastery of skill concepts, and promote completion of work.
  • Support students who may have a wide variety of educational backgrounds, academic achievement levels, and behaviors; adjust methods to meet the needs of students and communicate with classroom teachers concerning areas of growth.
  • Assist in testing students for MLE program eligibility; maintain eligibility lists; assist with student placement under MLE teacher direction.
  • Supervise student behavior and assist certificated staff with classroom management; facilitate mastery of social adjustment skills and ensure students stay on task; manage student behavior as authorized.
  • Build and maintain effective teams and communications.
  • Maintain a student‑centered, supportive environment.
  • Organize learning experiences for students.
  • Actively participate in training opportunities to complete the Washington State Core Competence requirements for para educators.
  • Reporting Relationships

    Reports to the school principal or administrator and receives guidance from assigned certificated staff.

    Mental Demands

    Requires dealing with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities, and communicating with students who have widely diverse language and cultural backgrounds.

    Physical Demands

    Potential exposure to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students and exposure to student noise levels.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment; one (1) year of experience working with school‑age children, non‑English‑speaking people, and diverse cultures required. Experience in a school setting desirable; instructional experience strongly preferred; training or experience in MLE instruction strongly preferred.

    • Ability to deal with students in a warm and confident manner.
    • Ability to remain flexible to changes in assignments or situations.

    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
