Position: Para educator - Non-Mainstream Special Education ILC - SUPPORT

Position Hours and Pay

Hours
: 6.5 hours per day for 164 days per year and 3.5 hours per day for 14 days per year. 7 hours per day for 4 days during the first year and 2 days each year thereafter until certification is completed.
Pay
: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 – $24.76 (25–26 PSE Salary Schedule).

Important Information

This is a 1:1 support para educator position. A change in assignment and/or location may occur based on student‑specific needs and variances in school enrollment.
Official hire date depends on school‑board approval and may change without notice. Contact HR with questions.
Required training:
Right Response Training within 3–5 months of hire, renewed annually before expiration. Complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and state‑mandated Para educator Certificate. Para educator Certificate Program is dependent on state funding.

Federal Minimum Employment Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must have at least one of the following:
    • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment.
    • AA degree or higher.
    • Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution.
    • Completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries.
    • Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.

Unofficial transcripts may be submitted with the application but official transcripts are required upon hire. Not providing required documents may delay hire.

Description

The para educator assists certificated staff with instructional and non‑instructional activities for non‑mainstreamed special education students, generally in a self‑contained classroom. Responsibilities include instructing students individually or in small groups, teaching basic life skills, and supervising student behavior activities.

Essential Functions Duties
  • Instructs moderately to severely handicapped students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities to promote understanding of presented materials. Provides encouragement, reinforcement, and achievement of educational objectives and goals defined by certificated staff. Assists with the administration of objective tests or other measurements.
  • Communicates with certificated staff regarding individual student progress; adjusts methods to meet diverse student needs; consults with staff concerning remediation or enrichment activities.
  • Assists certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments and other assessment records.
  • Attends to student physical and safety needs; monitors students for medical risks such as seizures or behaviors that may result in harm to themselves or others. Corrects behaviors and maintains discipline according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assists students with toileting, including catheterization and diapering; attends to personal hygiene needs. Assists washing hands and face, brushing teeth and hair, and bathing.
  • Assists students with interpersonal and personal skill mastery; helps feed students and teaches social aspects of eating with others.
  • Assists students with basic living skills and pre‑vocational activities. Facilitates communication skill development and integration with age‑group peers where possible.
  • Establishes communication with students, staff, and parents for student progress, safety, and community relations.
  • Provides physical assistance to students, such as lifting or positioning. Uses adaptive equipment to communicate with students; follows and documents procedures established by a physical therapist.
  • Monitors need for first aid for students and refers for treatment as appropriate.
  • Maintains cleanliness and hygiene of classroom and equipment. Washes dishes; cleans and disinfects tables and counters; washes and dries clothes, towels, washcloths and bibs.
