THIS POSITION IS FOR 8 HOURS PER DAY AT 260 DAYS PER YEAR.
PAY FOR POSITION: PSE Salary Schedule Level 13 - $ 40.52
General SummaryThis position's responsibilities are to perform maintenance and repair of district school buses and vehicles. Buses ranging from 2001 to present (gasoline, propane, diesel). Vehicles include vans, trucks, cargo trailers, flatbed trailers, etc. ranging from 1995 to present.
Essential FunctionsDepending upon the individual assignment, the Mechanic may perform all or a combination of the following:
- Performs services and repair, which includes preventative maintenance and safety checks on district vehicles.
- Diagnoses and performs a full range of mechanical, structural or electrical repairs on buses and other district vehicles. This includes, but not limited to repairing diesel, propane, and gasoline engines, air and hydraulic brakes, fuel and electrical systems and electrical wiring repairs.
- Inspects, repairs and rebuilds components of gasoline, propane, and diesel-powered school buses and other district vehicles; repairs exhaust leaks, oil leaks, fuel leaks, and faulty brakes to assure safe transportation of students and staff.
- Answers telephone and two-way radio to communicate with drivers. Responds to drivers and bus breakdowns, including roadside service calls, bus deliveries, repairs, emergencies, and accident response.
- Changes tires and a wide variety of other vehicle parts for safe and cost effective vehicle operation. Installs cages, barriers, shelving in support vehicles, welds body panels and fabricates parts as needed; removes and installs glass.
- Uses computer systems and software including but not limited to:
Cummins-Insite, Ford-IDS, Bendix, Allison Doc., International-Service, Max, CAT, Lab Scope, and Emissions. - Cleans transportation facility, shop and bus wash area. Spreads salt in front and rear lots with trucks and spreads salt on sidewalks with hand spreader on inclement weather days. Moves wheel stops and paints lines for bus stalls as necessary. Locks up tools, building and fuel tanks.
- Repairs and replace bus seats, lap shoulder belts, plywood/rubber flooring in buses and body components and preventative maintenance.
- Checks and adds oil and other fluids for routine maintenance, as well as quick fixes/repairs as needed.
- Creates and completes vehicle maintenance records accurately and timely.
- Communicates clearly, appropriately, and effectively with end users, peers, leads, and administration. May communicate with parents, teachers, and coaches after hours on various field trips.
- Assists with winter weather related issues in regards to buses and snow chains, On-spot chains and Insta chains.
- Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains Zonar systems, radio systems and various camera systems.
- Present bus fleet and support vehicles for annual inspection with additional (uns-scheduled) winter inspections.
- Rebuilds lift cylinders, troubleshoots and adjusts as necessary.
- Changes filters and repairs dispenser on fuel island. Places additives in fuel tanks with each re-fueling and replaces filters for the tanks. Maintains fuel-monitoring systems.
- May help shop coordinator maintain and repair bus wash and re-stock as needed.
- Maintains and repairs HVAC/air conditioning systems on large and small buses. Repairs and fabricates air and coolant plumbing.
- May request materials for the repair of bus/auto fleet; process computerized inventory transactions; generate receipts, material issue records, work orders, inventory adjustments, part number maintenance records, etc.
- May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Understands and applies OSHA and WISHA standards to all aspects of work and reports potential hazards. Follows district policy and procedures.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to the Shop Coordinator and/or Director of Transportation or designee.
Mental Demands
Required to remain flexible to changes in assignments, priorities, and environments. Requires attention to detail and concentration.
Physical Demands
Work around and under heavy buses and power machinery requires constant safety awareness; required to lift, push, hold, move and position heavy objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds; required to stand for prolonged periods, reach above shoulders, and work in confined spaces. Exposure to high noise levels from buses and machinery; required to take precautions to avoid exposure to fumes, noise, dirt, grease, chemical hazards, toxic or caustic chemicals and airborne particles;
required to work outdoors in inclement weather on emergency repairs; required to wear personal protective clothing and/or equipment.
Passage of a pre-employment physical is required of this position (the district will assume the cost.)
