Transportation Supervisor

Overview

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Transportation, the Transportation Supervisor directs daily transportation operations to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable student transportation. The position requires expertise in driver and bus assistant supervision, student management, compliance, emergency response and fostering positive relationships with staff, schools, and families.

• Oversees daily operations of bus drivers and bus assistants, including scheduling, coordination, performance, and evaluation.
• Evaluates bus drivers and bus assistants in coordination with the Assistant Director to apply objective evaluation criteria during probationary and annual reviews.
• Exercises independent judgment to assess and resolve unanticipated operational challenges, ensuring minimal disruption while maintaining safety, compliance, and efficiency.
• Serves as primary liaison between schools, bus drivers, and bus assistants, fostering collaboration and addressing concerns proactively.
• Investigates student misconduct on school buses; administers discipline according to district policy and coordinates with drivers, administrators, parents, and students to resolve issues.
• Advocates and promotes PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports); plans and implements workshops and trainings for drivers and bus assistants.
• Provides input and recommendations regarding district transportation services.
• Coordinates responses to emergency transportation situations and vehicle problems, ensuring minimal service disruption.
• Establishes and maintains positive public relations with parents, schools, and departments; addresses concerns.
• Assists with accident and collision investigations, prepares reports, and coordinates with law enforcement and emergency responders.
• Ensures compliance with state and federal laws, administers drug testing program and other DOT driver qualifications.
• Coordinates Driver Safety Program and bus driver training programs.
• Assists in recruitment, hiring and evaluation processes to maintain a high‑performing transportation team.
• Administers the collective bargaining agreement, investigates alleged misconduct, and assists with grievances and contract disputes.
• Maintains secure transportation data and confidential records; prepares required reports.
• Represents the district on internal and external committees as appropriate.
• Maintains proactive relationships with students, parents, and district staff.
• Conducts inclement weather road inspections to assess transportation safety.
• Uses technology for planning, managing, communication, presentations, training and workshops.
• Attends staff and professional meetings as assigned.
• Serves on district leadership teams; works collaboratively with interdepartmental teams and provides requested reports.
• May be required to drive a school bus as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Minimum of five (5) years experience in school district transportation operations or related field, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory or training capacity.
• Certificate of Completion of the OSPI/CWU Pupil Transportation Management Program or enrollment in the program.

• Demonstrated strong leadership, supervisory, and team‑management skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle multiple priorities under pressure.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Knowledge of P‑12 and special education transportation laws, safety standards, and industry regulations.
• Ability to research, analyze, and interpret data, policies, and regulations.
• Knowledge of PBIS and/or other proven student management programs.
• Knowledge of industry‑accepted accident investigation procedures.
• Ability to interpret and apply labor relations principles, employment law, and collective bargaining agreements.
• Skill in public speaking, employee training, and delivering presentations.
• Proficiency in transportation management software, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and district systems for reports and correspondence.
