Substitute Bus Driver

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Drive a school bus to transport students safely to and from school and special events.
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip safety inspections, checking fluids, lights, brakes, and other equipment, and report maintenance needs.
  • Supervise and correct student behavior, maintain discipline, and model safe behavior.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, parents, school staff, dispatchers, mechanics, and the public to ensure safety and community relations.
  • Observe and obey state, local, and district laws, policies, and procedures related to student transportation, and conduct emergency evacuation drills.
  • Issue discipline slips as required and advise students with discipline problems; meet with principals or parents if warranted.
  • Provide first aid to injured or ill students as necessary.
  • Assist students with transportation concerns, verify permission, and manage changes in destination.
  • Maintain and update route maps, protect the vehicle from damage, and use two‑way radio for communication.
  • OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Maintain a log of bus activity, passenger count, mileage, fuel, and other required data.
  • Perform routine maintenance activities such as adding fuel, oil, and fluids, sweeping, and washing the bus; clean up spills following approved procedures.
  • Orient substitute drivers to assigned routes and schedules.
  • Serve on district committees or departmental work teams, modeling appropriate behavior and protecting confidential information.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
  • Respond to special needs of students related to behavior, medical concerns, or other emergent needs.
  • REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

    Reports to the Director of Transportation or designee.

    MENTAL DEMANDS

    Requires substantial concentration in various traffic and road conditions, decisive judgment in emergencies, and occasional interaction with distraught or difficult individuals.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Steering, clutching, and braking a school bus requires strong physical condition; prolonged sitting; exposure to high noise levels; road hazards; inclement weather operations; and completion of a pre‑employment physical and drug test.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment. No specific degree requirement; however, a valid Washington state Class B commercial driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsement is required.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
    • Read and follow road signs and directions.
    • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and the public.
    • Steer, shift, and brake a school bus for extended runs.
    • Know laws and rules of the road.
    • Learn district routes, directions, and schedules.
    • Model appropriate and safe behavior for students.
    • Instruct students in safe and responsible behavior.
    • Monitor and correct student behavior.
    • Perform minor bus maintenance and service.
    • Operate two‑way radio and other safety equipment.
    • Maintain accurate records and logs.
    • Apply defensive driving techniques.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders.
    LICENSES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Fingerprinting and background check with no convictions involving minors.
    • Complete district infection control training.
    • Possess a valid Washington state Class B commercial driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsement.
    • Mandatory drug testing.
    • Pass a school driver training course.
    • Valid first aid and CPR certification.
    • Meet state mandated physical strength, hearing, and visual acuity requirements.
