LIBRARY PROGRAM COORDINATOR

GENERAL

PURPOSE:

Working under the supervision of a Program & Outreach Librarian, this position is assigned to prepare and present programs to a specific age group (Children: 0-7; Tween: 8-12; Teen: 13-18; Adults: 19+). This position also provides staff support for general, routine clerk duties as needed to assist delivery of public library services for the City.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Program Coordination - Children & Tweens
    • Prepares and presents programs to a variety of age groups, planning around themes and applying literacy concepts;
    • Must be able to entertain an audience by singing, reading or telling stories, perform dramatic presentations which may include costumes or dance movements, use of puppets, or other props;
    • Communicates with parents or caregivers to discuss and answer questions regarding literacy skills and children's developmental stages;
    • May use graphic-design tools to create advertisements for the division;
  • Program Coordination - Teens & Adults
    • Prepares and presents programs for teens and adults that build peer relationships, promote reading and library services, and learn new skills;
    • Uses graphic design tools to create advertisements and social media posts to promote programs and services;
    • Uses and assists teens with their use of various forms of technology, including computers (Windows and MacOS), VR, video-game consoles, projectors, audio-recording equipment, and printers;
    • Creates resource guides and booklists related to teen and adult services and literature;
    • Works with other division staff to plan and host four seasonal events annually and one special event each month;
    • May coordinate with community partners, including school libraries, other government agencies and departments, businesses, and non-profits;
    • Communicates with teens, parents, caregivers, and adults regarding library services, programs, and policies;
    • Schedule:

      Teen Program Coordinators work primarily afternoons and evenings and at least one Saturday per month. Adult Program Coordinators work both days and evenings, and at least one Saturday per month.
  • Clerk
    • Attends patron services desks;
    • Greets patrons and assists with requests;
    • Instructs patrons on library policies and procedures;
    • Assists patrons in locating books and material and providing reference services;
    • Collects fines and fees from patrons;
    • Checks out library materials;
    • Monitors their assigned area of the library, including organizing and tidying up public spaces and shelved materials, and addressing behavioral issues;
    • Provides basic assistance to patrons using public computers, printers, and copiers;
    • Locates items that are on hold;
    • Sets up and maintains displays;
  • General responsibilities
    • Performs a variety of general clerical and office duties;
    • Operates computer for word and information processing;
    • Maintains records and files;
    • Performs related duties as required;
    • Other duties as assigned;
    • May be trained to assist with responsibilities in other divisions as needed;
    • Schedule:

      This position is required to work at least one evening each week and at least one Saturday per month;
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school graduate or equivalent is required;
  • Previous program planning and performance experience and/or experience working with children or teens;
  • For Children's Program Coordinators, musical experience (including ability to play a musical instrument) is preferable;
  • Ability to interact with the public, communicate well with parents and caregivers, and enjoy working with children or teens; understand children & teen developmental stages;
  • Knowledge of library methods, practices, and procedures;
    Dewey Decimal system;
  • Ability to perform general clerical functions quickly and accurately;
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independently in carrying out work assignments;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees;
  • Exhibit excellent customer service when working with patrons of all ages;
  • Operate various computers, office machines and equipment;
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position;
  • Must abide by all City and Library policies and procedures;
  • Must work well with others and be a team player;
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred, though not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Performs duties that may include physical effort, such as pushing or pulling a loaded book truck, lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, and walking;
  • Occasionally may lift/carry materials up to 40 pounds;
  • May sit or stand for long periods of time
