Overview
MECHANIC 1 – Department:
Public Works, Division:
Fleet & Garbage Services Division. Job Class:
Part Time. Pay Grade PT6.
Under the supervision of the Fleet & Garbage Services Division Manager, perform a variety of tasks on equipment including oil changes, small equipment services, clean shop, chase parts; and perform a variety of delivery, general maintenance, service and repair on the city solid waste cans.
Essential Functions- Garbage Services Systems. Delivers waste cans to individual homes and performs general maintenance and repairs as needed. Break down used and broken cans and salvage usable parts for repair of other cans.
- Equipment Operation. Operates light, medium and heavy equipment including, but not limited to:
- loaders
- backhoes
- forklifts
- saws
- grinders
- air compressors
- wrenches
- weed trimmers
- pruners
- hammers
- shovels
- Performs maintenance on assigned equipment. Detects and reports mechanical problems with equipment to the Motor Pool Division.
- Miscellaneous Duties as Assigned. Be familiar with streets and locating addresses.
- Must be able to report to work on time as scheduled and abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner in all circumstances.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Physical Demands. Requires moderate to heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull or lift medium to heavy weights. Required to work in difficult working positions. May have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
- Working Conditions. Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and fumes, and prolonged high noise levels. Often works in and around vehicular traffic. May at times include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.
- Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. May be required to work unconventional work hours or shifts.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience: Related experience helpful
- Utah CDL Class A: Required in 6 months
- Forklift Certification: Required in 1 month
- Utah Vehicle Inspector Certification: Required in 6 months
- DOT Physical Card: Required
- Freon Certification
- Tire Certification
