Position: SUPERVISOR 1, ASSOCIATE ENGINEER

The Nevada Department of Transportation is hiring for a Supervisor 1, Associate Engineer located within District II in Sparks, NV. The incumbent serves as the Survey Crew Chief and is responsible for assisting the Resident Engineer with administering construction contracts, supervising engineering technicians and/or engineering students, directing activities of assigned staff, organizing personnel, equipment and materials, delegating assignments, evaluating employee performance, ensuring accurate and timely completion of work assignments, performing construction survey, and providing guidance and training to engineering technicians.

Job Summary

The supervisor will coordinate employees and work groups performing a wide variety of engineering functions across program areas including environmental services, materials and testing, survey projects, road design, transportation safety projects, traffic design, structural inspections, and research and development. The incumbent will supervise technical engineering staff, perform engineering analyses, and make engineering judgments that impact daily operations and policy implementation.

Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field; OR certified as an Engineering Intern and four years of subprofessional engineering experience; OR four years of experience at the Engineering Technician II level or above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Job Duties

Supervisors at all levels coordinate employees and/or work groups performing a wide variety of engineering functions depending on the program or project assignment. Under general supervision, incumbents supervise technical engineering employees, perform engineering functions requiring analysis of diverse data, exercise judgment impacting daily operations, interpret and apply general guidelines, and provide recommendations used by others in decision making.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of current engineering principles and practices; practical application of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra; engineering terminology, concepts, and calculations. General knowledge of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and applicable health and safety regulations.

Abilities include making logical engineering judgments; reading and comprehending technical and scientific documents, maps, specifications, and plans; performing computations and calculations; analyzing and interpreting information, technical data, problems, situations, practices and procedures; defining specific engineering problems and objectives; identifying relevant concerns and alternatives; using a scientific calculator; establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with department staff, management, contractors, the public, and other outside entities;

working within the Cartesian coordinate system; completing workload within established deadlines; communicating effectively both orally and in writing; performing work according to established policies and procedures; and working independently and as part of a team.
