Associate Engineer

Position Overview

The Nevada Department of Transportation is hiring for a Staff 1, Associate Engineer for the District 2 Permit Office in Sparks, Nevada. This District traverses 8 counties across Northwest Nevada and is responsible for permitting over 1,700 road miles. The role requires a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little training or supervision.

• Review permit applications and conduct site visits to ensure compliance with Department standards and policies.
• Inspect permits during construction and complete daily activity reports.
• Demonstrate knowledge of NDOT construction standards and implement them.
• Provide public permitting information and assistance, including outdoor advertising sign inspections to verify compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Prepare clear documentation, maintain records, and correspond with stakeholders and the public.
• Design, process, and manage District contracts and special projects to completion.

Work out of the office or assigned vehicle for an entire shift. Training will be provided.

• Certified by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as an Engineer Intern; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related field; OR two years of journey‑level technical experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in planning, design, analysis, and inspection of transportation and highway systems, bridges, and related structures.
• Proficiency in designing and analyzing traffic systems, pavement structural sections, bridge evaluations, and environmental compliance for water, air, noise, and hazardous waste.
• Ability to conduct on‑site highway construction inspections, prepare reports, and use the Construction Engineering Manpower Management System (CEMMS).

• Applying algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to engineering problems.
• Engineering principles and practices, graph and table formatting.
• Computations and calculations involving engineering principles.
• Reading and understanding technical reports, maps, specifications, plans, and related documents.
• Writing technical reports and correspondences.
• Charting area, volume, length, proportion calculations.
• Planning, organizing, and scheduling work to accomplish objectives.
• Teamwork and cooperative relationships with contractors, co‑workers, and other agencies.
• Independent work, follow‑through on assignments, and diplomatic interaction with the public.
