Engineering Technician

Job Summary

The Nevada Department of Transportation is hiring an Engineering Technician 4 located in District 2, Sparks, NV, on Construction Crew 913. The incumbent ensures that required field inspections of projects are completed and well documented; all construction activities use proper methods and standards; contractors’ quantities of work are measured and calculated; necessary material and soils testing frequencies and specifications are met;

all sampling and testing is performed per established test methods; the survey crew chief is assisted with construction survey as directed; contract files are organized according to the documentation manual; required contract forms and reports are completed; quantity calculations, test reports, payrolls, and other miscellaneous contract files are reviewed; all assigned trainings are attended; equipment and vehicle are properly maintained;

a positive professional public image for the Department is maintained; and tasks as directed by the Resident Engineer are completed. Engineering Technicians on construction crews may work in an office setting or outside in urban and rural environments, and may work alternative shifts outside traditional business hours.

• Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in engineering, physics, math or a closely related field and two years of experience in a specialized engineering function or program area involving the application of work procedures, standards and controls; or
• Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of progressively responsible experience as described above; or
• One year of experience as an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service; or
• An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

• Assist engineers in performing field and laboratory tests, setting up equipment, gathering and compiling data, analyzing technical problems, conducting research, and analyzing data to ensure accuracy and conformance to policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards.
• Assist engineers, contractors, department staff, other agencies, the public, and private businesses regarding water rights ownership, bid documents, contract plans, right‑of‑way plans, acquisition and disposal documentation, contract specifications, test results, and federal and state guidelines and procedures; review, prioritize, research, and prepare information in appropriate format.
• Perform technical research to ensure department programs, testing methods, policies and procedures comply with federal and state requirements; review technical documents, analyze and interpret data, note discrepancies, verify areas of non‑compliance, contact appropriate parties, and make recommendations to correct problems or revise existing policies, procedures or methods.
• Maintain records and contract documents according to the established filing system; enter data into the computer system for analysis; review construction, water rights and contract documents and/or plan specifications; check applications and technical reports for completeness, clarity and conformance to department guidelines and federal and state policies and procedures.
• Perform field inspections of construction projects, well locations, material equipment, property lines and boundaries, right‑of‑way mapping, and safety barriers; review and interpret construction plans, water rights records, survey and specifications to determine compliance; perform field measurements, record data, provide information, discuss problems, recommend solutions to contractors, professionals, property owners, department personnel and the general public; document the inspection process for future reference, payment of contract billings and to meet federal and state requirements.
• Perform manual and computer‑aided drafting assignments by preparing maps, charts, graphs, tables, slopes and contours for construction projects, right‑of‑way locations and water rights ownership, water rights data, data analysis, water quality data and federal, state and private property location.
