A Carpenter constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, metal, wallboard, etc., using carpenter’s hand tools and power tools, and conforming to local building codes. While maintaining the necessary production and quality required to complete a project and exceeding the customers’ expectations.

A Carpenter studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine the type of material required, such as metal studs or fiberboard, and dimensions of the structure or fixture to be fabricated. The carpenter selects specified types of materials, prepares layout using tape, framing square, etc., and marks cutting and assembly lines on materials with pencil, chalk, and marking gauge. They shape materials to prescribed measurements using power and hand tools, assemble, cut, and fasten them together with applicable fasteners, and verify trueness of structures before completion.

The role also includes applying shock‑absorbing, sound‑deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls, and fitting and installing prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.

Carpenters are responsible for the production and quality of the products they install, working safely and maintaining a safe work environment. They usually report to a foreman or lead and are assigned a range of tasks to be completed. Timely production and quality are the main responsibilities.

Carpenters must work within precise limits and standards of accuracy, applying shop mathematics to solve problems, planning work, selecting proper tools, comparing differences in size, shape, and form of lines and objects, picturing solid objects from drawings or diagrams, performing a variety of duties that may change often, and rating information using measurable or checkable standards.

Physical requirements include climbing, balance on scaffolds and ladders, reaching for, handling, and manipulating objects and materials, lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and good vision (either natural or corrected).
