Plastering entails a great deal of dexterity and speed. It involves coating internal walls and ceilings with different types of plaster so the surfaces are ready to be decorated, and coating external surfaces with materials such as cement or sand.

There is also a workshop component of plastering that involves creating plaster work to order in various shapes and sizes, while maintaining the required production and quality to exceed customer expectations.

• Apply coats of plaster to interior walls, ceilings, and partitions of buildings to produce a finished surface according to blueprints, architect's drawings, or oral instructions, using hand tools and portable power tools.
• Direct workers to mix plaster to desired consistency and to erect scaffolds.
• Spread plaster over lath or masonry base using a trowel, and smooth plaster with a float to attain uniform thickness.
• Apply scratch, brown, or finish coats of plaster to wood, metal, or board lath successively.
• Roughen undercoat with a scratcher to provide bond for succeeding coats of plaster.
• Create decorative textures in the finish coat by marking the surface with a brush and trowel or by spattering the surface with pebbles.
• May mix mortar.
• May install guide wires on the exterior surface of buildings to indicate the thickness of plaster to be applied.
• May install precast ornamental plaster pieces by applying mortar to the back of the pieces, pressing them into place on the wall or ceiling, and be designated as an Ornamental‑Plaster Sticker.
• May specialize in applying finish or rough coats of plaster and be designated as a Plasterer, Finish, or Plasterer, Rough.
• May apply plaster with a spray gun and be designated as a Plasterer, Spray Gun.
• May perform maintenance work only and be designated as a Plasterer, Maintenance.
• Ensure timely production and quality of installed products.
• Work safely and maintain a safe work environment.

• Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders.
• Reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials.
• Lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as needed.
• Have adequate vision either naturally or with correction.
