Position: HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER 2 - UNDERFILL

Job Summary

Highway Maintenance Workers are certified by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to operate a variety of complex or specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment. They restore and maintain roadway surfaces, roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts, and ditches; repair or replace road appurtenances such as guardrails, markers, guideposts, and fences; and perform winter maintenance, snow removal, and summer betterment projects.

Essential Qualifications
  • One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work; OR one year as a Highway Maintenance Worker I in Nevada State service.
Job Duties
  • Maintain pavement surfaces, shoulders, clear zones, and associated roadways in good repair.
  • Perform winter maintenance, including snowplow operation, anti‑icing activities, and salt and sand application.
  • Operate and maintain a range of equipment such as rotary snowplows, motor graders, backhoes, asphalt distributors, chip spreaders, and culvert cleaners.
  • Act as certified operator for Highway Maintenance Workers I and II, providing training and overseeing equipment use.
  • Install and repair roadway markings, signage, and signal equipment, including bulbs, fixtures, and sensors.
  • Measure and install permanent and temporary pavement markings.
  • Apply chip and flush seals, perform cold milling, and contribute to construction overlay projects.
  • Respond to customer service requests, prepare billable accident reports, and enter data into the Maintenance Management System.
  • Establish traffic controls using accepted methods, reroute traffic, and manage flow in maintenance areas, construction zones, and accident scenes.
  • Maintain and operate snow and chemical stockpiles, including salt, sand, and anti‑icing chemicals.
  • Maintain radio contact with base stations, maintenance personnel, law enforcement, and the District Operations Center; use Incident Command System protocols.
  • Inspect and supervise contractors’ work, ensuring compliance and quality control.
  • Maintain landscaped areas, repair and replace trees, shrubs, and ground cover, and perform regular mowing and reseeding.
  • Remove roadway and roadside debris, excess dirt, vegetation, and hazardous obstacles, including dead animals.
  • Respond to accidents and fatalities, completing required forms and documentation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned and continue training under supervision.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of herbicide and insecticide application procedures and equipment.
  • General knowledge of repairing highway roadbeds, surfaces, shoulders, drainage facilities, and fixtures; familiarity with materials, methods, and equipment used in routine maintenance.
  • Understanding of traffic control and routing through maintenance and construction zones, proper drainage and erosion control, snow removal techniques, and anti‑icing methods.
  • Knowledge of pruning, watering, and dust control techniques for landscaped areas.
  • Awareness of endangered species habitats, protection techniques, and safe removal of non‑native species.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations governing work at job sites and incident command system procedures during emergency operations.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain hand and power tools associated with routine highway maintenance tasks; read and understand the Maintenance Management System Manual.
