Special Education Teacher – Transition

Location: Empower U, North Sparta, Michigan

Position Type: Full-Time

Salary: $54,386 to $79,339 Per Year

Responsibilities
  • Participate in development and promotion of special education philosophy of service and delivery.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Evaluate students’ skills in learning, behavior, and communication using formal assessments.
  • Plan comprehensive educational programs to develop academic, communication, social, and community skills for assigned students.
  • Develop individual instructional objectives based on assessments and update objectives based on skill acquisition.
  • Provide direct instruction for students with disabilities in areas of academic, communication, social skills, and transition.
  • Collect, maintain, and analyze data related to acquisition of functional, community-referenced skills.
  • Cooperate in planning curriculum and instructional programs with other personnel to encourage integrated team services.
  • Establish methods to utilize functional behavior assessment to develop Positive Behavior Support Plans.
  • Keep daily anecdotal records of students.
  • Direct Instructional Support Specialists assigned to program/classroom.
  • Develop timely and compliant IEPs for eligible students.
  • Document and share student progress on goals, objectives, accommodations, service time, and discipline for all students.
  • Maintain an electronic log to document students’ goals, objectives, accommodations, and other IEP-related services.
  • Assess, teach, and modify instruction and curricula for students in areas such as transition assessments, planning, coordination of transition activities, and individualized goals related to social relationships, cultural competence, self-determination, and transitions to postsecondary training, career/employment, community participation, and adult living.
  • Collaborate with community businesses to establish vocational learning expectations and outcomes for work experiences and shadowing opportunities.
  • Supervise, evaluate and coach students’ skills at vocational training sites.
  • Perform all other duties as appropriate and determined by Principal/Administrator.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education from an accredited university.
  • Special Education Certification with SLD, EI or CI endorsement preferred.
  • Experience working with special needs students.
  • Experience delivering instruction in subject area content.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
  • Ability to communicate informational ideas in spoken and written language for clear understanding.
  • Ability to provide Highly Qualified (HQ) status.
  • Experience working in Center Programs preferred.
  • Willingness to participate in all phases of the instructional program.
  • Ability to work constructively with parents, students, and staff.
  • Must pass a criminal background check as required by School Safety Legislation.
