GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Summer Reading Camp Media Specialist performs a variety of services for the assigned elementary school media center. The specialist enters student data into the computer, assists students and teachers using the automated catalog and in locating library materials. Additionally, the Summer Reading Camp Media Specialist assists in circulating library equipment, keeps the library clean and orderly, copies printed materials and tapes (audio and video), and assists in producing visual materials.

The specialist performs clerical duties as needed. Reports to the summer reading camp administrator.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the media center. Operates the curriculum desk.
  • Keeps the media center orderly and attractive.
  • Assists students and teachers in the use of the computerized card catalog.
  • Assists with inventory as needed. Assists in the ordering of books and other materials.
  • Catalogs and processes new books and materials in a timely manner.
  • Performs simple diagnosis of malfunctioning equipment (power on, cords plugged in, etc.).
  • Assists students and faculty members in locating materials.
  • Shelves books and materials. Repairs books.
  • Maintains order and a pleasant atmosphere in the media center.
  • Collects fines for lost books, damaged books, etc. in accordance with District policy.
  • Sorts media center mail.
  • Schedules classes and use of the media center. Schedules equipment that is heavily used.
  • Distributes media to the teachers received from the regional media center and collects it from teachers when it is scheduled to be returned.
  • Distributes information to administrators and teachers that would be of value to them as found in periodicals, web pages, etc.
  • Keeps current of new children's literature and authors.
  • Introduces students and teachers to a variety of children's literature.
  • Maintains proficiency in the use of the current circulation software and any other software used in the media center.
  • Supports district contracted online electronic library resources.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Must possess a valid education certificate from the South Carolina State Board of Education as a Media Specialist. Must possess a valid state driver's license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements

Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

Requires ability to read a variety of laws, policies and procedures, technical and professional studies, reference books and publications, etc. Requires the ability to prepare performance appraisals, policies, complex reports, schedules, recommendations, correspondence, etc. with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
