Division of instructional services

This position intends to assist teachers directly in helping students develop proficient reading skills that will contribute to their academic growth. Help recognize, address, and meet the needs of at-risk students in the general education classroom. Works extensively with students to help them improve specific reading skills such as letter-naming, initial sounds, phoneme segmentation, and comprehension strategies. Reports to building principal.

Specific duties and responsibilities

Essential job functions

Works cooperatively with building principal and classroom teachers in their classrooms and with children in small groups.

Helps with scheduling of students.

Provide support, training, coaching, and mentoring to build school and teacher capacity to increase student achievement.

Collaborate with district administrators and school administrators, individual teachers, and teams of teachers at assigned school(s).

Collect and analyze data to inform instructional decisions at the building level.

Plan, coteach, and model research-based instructional approaches; assist and collaborate with the teacher to

Determine and reflect upon those approaches that best meet the students' needs.

Consults frequently with classroom teachers on matters relating to reading instruction using our progress-monitoring instrument as a base.

Design interventions and writes lesson plans detailing methods and materials.

Promotes interest in reading.

Willing to obtain reading recovery training if needed.

Attend required professional development at the school level and district level.

Utilize knowledge of research-based assessment and remediation strategies for increasing student achievement.

Provide teachers with the resources needed to deliver a high level of instructional support to accelerate the learning of students who need academic assistance in reading.

Assist teachers with data conversations for monitoring student progress in ways that inform teaching and motivate learners.

Support the implementation of the district's instructional initiatives in the school.

Connect students with appropriate programs and services that target their identified needs.

Analyze new student data upon enrollment to identify student needs and connect students with appropriate resources.

Stay current on coaching and feedback practices, trends, and developments in reading support.

Perform all other duties as assigned by the chief of academics and administration and principal.

Additional job functions

Minimum training and experience

Requires a valid teacher certificate from the south carolina state board of education, supplemented by at least three years of teaching experience, having demonstrated substantial success with students needing academic assistance in reading. Must possess a valid state driver's license.

Minimum qualifications or standards required to perform essential job functions

Physical requirements:

requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

Data conception: requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether like or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal communications: requires the ability to speak and signal people to convey or exchange information.

Includes giving assignments and directions to subordinates and receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor.

Language ability: requires ability to read a variety of professional, financial and legal reports and documentation, policy and procedure manuals, job applications, etc. Requires the ability to prepare general reports, presentation materials, correspondence, recommendations, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence.
