COLLETON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT – MUSIC (CHORAL) TEACHER JOB PURPOSE
Responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-based choral music instruction to students in grades 6-8. This educator develops musicianship, vocal technique, music literacy, and performance skills while fostering student creativity, collaboration, and appreciation for diverse musical traditions. The teacher supports school-wide goals, participates in performances and assessments, and contributes to a positive school culture aligned with district and South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) expectations.
ESSENTIALJOB FUNCTIONS
- Plan and deliver sequential, standards-aligned choral music instruction based on the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Arts Standards
- Teach healthy vocal technique, sight-reading, music literacy, ensemble skills, and performance etiquette appropriate for middle school learners
- Rehearse and direct choral ensembles, including preparation for concerts, school events, adjudicated performances, and community engagements
- Select age-appropriate, diverse choral repertoire that supports vocal development and cultural understanding
- Assess student learning using formative and summative assessments and maintain accurate academic records
- Integrate instructional technology, accompaniment skills (piano/keyboard), and instructional strategies to enhance music learning
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varied abilities, backgrounds, and learning styles
- Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to support student success
- Participate in professional learning communities, faculty meetings, and required professional development
- Support extracurricular or co-curricular music activities as assigned (e.g., honor choir preparation, festivals, clinics)
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues in both written and verbal formats
- Model professional behavior, ethical conduct, and appropriate classroom management
- Maintain classroom and rehearsal spaces that are safe, organized, and conducive to learning
- Stand for extended periods during rehearsals and performances
- Conduct and lead ensembles using appropriate conducting techniques and gestures
- Hear and evaluate vocal pitch, tone quality, balance, and blend
- Lift and move light classroom equipment (music stands, folders, small instruments)
- Comply with all district policies, SCDE regulations, and educator code of conduct requirements
- Perform related duties as required.
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in Music Education or a related field.
- Hold a valid South Carolina teaching certificate or eligibility for certification in an appropriate field, such as:
Music (P-12) or Middle Level Music (grades 5-8).
