Data Center Mechanical Operations Manager

Role Summary

The Data Center Mechanical Operations Manager leads all mechanical operations for a large-scale High-Performance Compute Center (HPCC) and its mission‑critical infrastructure. This role is responsible for the reliability, safety, and efficiency of cooling and HVAC systems that support 24/7/365 compute workloads.

You will manage mechanical engineers, technicians, and third‑party service providers while ensuring regulatory compliance, system uptime, and continuous improvement across chilled water plants, CRAH/CRAC units, cooling towers, pumps, and related infrastructure. Success in this role requires strong operational leadership, deep mechanical expertise, and cross‑functional collaboration with electrical, controls, and IT teams.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical operations for all critical cooling and HVAC infrastructure
  • Manage and develop teams of mechanical SMEs, technicians, and contracted vendors
  • Ensure 24/7 operational readiness through staffing, scheduling, and escalation planning
  • Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs
  • Drive system reliability, uptime, and energy efficiency improvements
  • Maintain SOPs, mechanical documentation, and asset records
  • Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and industry standards
  • Conduct inspections, performance audits, and water treatment programs
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action planning for incidents or failures
  • Coordinate mechanical integration with electrical, controls, and IT operations
  • Manage vendor performance, SLAs, and contractor oversight
  • Support capacity planning, optimization, and expansion initiatives
  • Define and track KPIs for reliability, maintenance, safety, and incident response
  • Deliver operational reporting and present performance metrics to leadership
  • Lead process improvements, retrofits, and infrastructure upgrades
  • Represent Mechanical Operations in safety drills and technical reviews

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in mechanical or HVAC operations within mission‑critical or 24/7 facilities
  • Proven leadership of technical teams and third-party service providers
  • Hands‑on experience with large-scale cooling infrastructure supporting data centers or high‑availability environments
  • Strong working knowledge of safety and regulatory standards (OSHA, NFPA, ASHRAE)
  • Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and decision‑making skills
