Job Summary

The CNC Machinist sets up and operates CNC and manual equipment following standard machining methods and procedures; produces parts to production and quality standards; documents machining and general machining processes in the form of standard operating procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Program, set‑up and operate all CNC lathes/VMC machining centers, manual machines (lathes, drill presses, mills, routers, grinding machines, etc.) and measuring equipment to produce quality parts within deadlines.
  • Convert designs and drawings into code programming language for CNC equipment and validate programs against established specifications.
  • Determine dimensions and tolerances of pieces to be machined, sequence of operations and machines needed by studying specifications such as blueprints, sketches, damaged parts or descriptions of parts.
  • Inspect parts, tooling, and material to specifications.
  • Maintain area, equipment, and tooling in a safe, clean, and satisfactory operating condition.
  • Monitor work to ensure that machines are functioning properly.
  • Work from draft drawings and written instructions to create replacement and new parts as well as for tooling or prototype equipment.
  • Identify production standards for set‑up and machine times.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 5 years machining experience, including the ability to set up and operate CNC equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of machining practices, tooling, drafting, CNC machines, controls, programming, measuring equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to program CNC lathes and VMC machines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot CNC operating/programming issues.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills and mid‑level math skills.
  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast‑paced, changing environment.
  • Strong organizational and follow‑up skills, and attention to detail.
  • AA degree in Machining/Mechanical Technology, equivalent trade school or military training, or comparable related experience preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work environment includes frequent reaching with hands and arms, standing or sitting, squatting, turning/twisting, and operating tools or controls. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push or pull up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures and workspace restrictions. The noise level is frequently loud. Employees must wear proper personal protective equipment, which may include eye, hearing, and respiratory protection, protective smock, steel‑toe shoes, gloves, hard hats or face shields. Travel may be required.
