The College of Business at Black Hills State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Management beginning August 2026. Black Hills State University is a teaching-focused institution located in Spearfish, South Dakota, in the scenic Black Hills region. The College of Business is accredited by AACSB International and serves approximately 400 business students across campuses in Spearfish and Rapid City.
The college offers undergraduate programs in Business Administration with specializations including accounting, agribusiness/ranch management, business analytics, economics, finance, entrepreneurial studies, health services administration, human resource management, management, and marketing, as well as an MBA in applied management.
The successful candidate will join a collaborative, student-centered faculty committed to teaching excellence, applied scholarship, and community engagement. Effective communication, collaboration, and enthusiasm for student mentorship are central to our culture. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda consistent with AACSB Scholarly Academic (SA) standards and to contribute to the life of the college and university through service.
Duties and Expectations:
- Teach undergraduate and MBA courses in management and related fields, including areas such as strategic management, organizational behavior, human resources, international business, entrepreneurship, healthcare management, agriculture management, and managerial communications.
- The standard teaching load is four courses per semester (4–4), aligned with our mission as a teaching-focused institution. Opportunities for summer teaching may also be available.
- Hold and maintain AACSB Scholarly Academic (SA) qualification through ongoing peer-reviewed research.
- Participate in student advising, recruitment, and retention activities.
- Participate in service activities at the college and university levels.
- Teach face-to-face, online, and at our extension campus in Rapid City.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or DBA in Management, or a closely related discipline.
- Doctoral candidates who are ABD and near graduation will be considered. Degree completion must occur no later than one year after the initial start date of the contract. The initial contract will be a term contract at the instructor level, $4,000 less than the terminal degree compensation. Upon successful degree completion, the following year's contract will include a $4,000 salary increase and assistant professor rank reflecting degree completion.
Upon request, one-year prior service may be applied toward promotion and tenure, with BHSU and BOR approval. - Candidates must demonstrate qualifications consistent with achieving and/or maintaining AACSB Scholarly Academic (SA) status; early-career candidates should show an active research pipeline, while candidates more than five years post-PhD must provide evidence of recent published peer reviewed scholarship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Successful experience teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level.
- Professional or industry experience in management.
