As a Professional Land Surveyor in our Spearfish office, you’ll lead survey efforts for a wide range of civil engineering projects, ensuring the precision, legality, and quality of survey deliverables from start to finish.
In this role, you’ll oversee both field and office survey activities, prepare and review legal survey documents, and ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations. Building on your experience as a Survey Party Chief, you’ll provide technical guidance, mentor team members, and collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and clients to support successful project execution.

Key Responsibilities- Manage survey projects from planning to completion, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of survey deliverables.
- Lead complex field surveys, such as boundary determinations, topographic surveys, and ALTA/NSPS surveys, ensuring precision and compliance.
- Analyze survey data using advanced software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center) to prepare detailed deliverables, including plats, maps, and legal descriptions.
- Review and certify survey deliverables for accuracy, legality, and compliance with standards and regulations.
- Ensure all survey activities comply with industry standards (e.g., ALTA/NSPS), state laws, and local regulations.
- Collaborate with Engineers, CADD Designers, and Project Managers to integrate survey data into project designs and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare and sign legal survey documents, such as boundary plats and easement descriptions, as a licensed professional.
- Mentor Survey Party Chiefs and Technicians, providing training on advanced survey techniques, software, and legal requirements.
- Stay updated on advancements in surveying technology (e.g., LiDAR, drones) and recommend innovative solutions to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Provide technical expertise during client meetings, regulatory consultations, and project reviews.
- Minimum of an Associate’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or a related field required;
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure required.
- 4–6 years of experience in land surveying, with a focus on civil engineering projects.
- Advanced proficiency in survey equipment (e.g., robotic total stations, GPS, drones) and software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center).
- Strong knowledge of surveying standards (e.g., ALTA/NSPS), state regulations, and legal requirements for survey documents.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage survey projects and lead a team effectively.
- Ability to perform fieldwork, which involves walking, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain.
- Capable of lifting and carrying survey equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, and other environmental factors.
- Adequate vision and hearing abilities to effectively use survey equipment, read and interpret measurements, and communicate with team members.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and use computer software for documentation purposes.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as necessary.
