The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to residents during scheduled work periods in long‑term care. The role provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of residents while adhering to infection prevention, control policies, and personal protective equipment use.
- Assists with basic health‑care needs, including bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, and recording vital signs.
- Provides psychosocial support and personal care to assigned residents.
- Assists residents in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct transfer techniques and equipment, and performs range‑of‑motion and passive exercises.
- Prepares food, facilitates dining, and ensures a positive dining experience for residents, including meal and snack assistance and provision of water and supplements.
- Aids nursing staff with procedures, documents resident interactions, and tracks outcomes related to care, behavior, activity, and diet.
- Communicates changes in residents’ conditions and care concerns to the charge nurse.
- Collects non‑invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs.
- Maintains housekeeping and laundry services to keep residents’ living areas clean and operational.
- Supports wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation.
- May participate in departmental/organizational committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED (preferred but not required).
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of starting the position; enrollment in a training program or endorsement is acceptable. Facility provides CNA training and certification.
- Successfully completes yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits. At least 12 hours of continuing education are required annually.
- Maintains all department‑specific required certifications.
- When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on facility responsibilities, may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver, requiring a motor‑vehicle report, valid driver’s license, and medical qualification to perform essential driving functions per Sanford Driving Policy.
