Salary and CompensationSalary ranges are based on experience, seniority, agency budget and the nature of the role. For union positions, compensation follows the applicable bargaining unit's schedule.
Duties- Cleans and maintains public areas such as restrooms, campgrounds, parking lots, trails, beaches, etc.
- Performs manual labor tasks that may require specialized skill.
- Installs, repairs and maintains signs (regulatory, historic, information) using hand or handheld power tools.
- Plants, transplants, prunes, trims and fertilizes trees, flowers, shrubs; seeds lawns and gardens; sprays for insects and plant diseases; cuts grass, rakes leaves and waters vegetation as required.
- Loads and unloads trucks (firewood, park supplies, equipment, etc.), uses dollies, stores supplies in stockrooms or warehouses, and takes periodic inventories.
- Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and tools by washing, inspecting, tightening, lubricating and sharpening cutting tools.
- Repairs and paints guard rails; sets up wooden horses, cones, etc. for traffic control; moves equipment, sweeps, collects and removes trash.
- Operates handheld power tools.
- Installs attachments (mowers, plow blades, leaf catcher buckets, vacuum cleaners) on tractors and/or trucks for grass cutting, roadway cleaning, snow removal, etc.
- Operates motor vehicles including light vehicles, trucks, etc., in connection with assigned unit activities.
- Operates camp registration offices, issues admission tickets, receives receipts and maintains simple records.
- Performs related duties as required.
- At least two years of full-time (or equivalent part‑time) technical or professional experience in forestry, parks or recreational management, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Associate’s degree or higher majoring in forestry, natural resources management, or parks and recreation management may substitute for the required experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated based on completed requirements.
- Current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, as required by assignment.
- Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
- Knowledge of the geographic composition of the assigned work area.
- Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms.
- Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
