2026 Summer Camp - Male Lead Camp Counselor

Summer camp season runs June 8, 2026 - July 31, 2026. This role is for a 1‑month camp as a Lead Camp Counselor with The Salvation Army Southern California.

Scope of Position

The Lead Counselor guides and trains summer camp counselors, overseeing their conduct and behavior. They serve as a spiritual mentor for counselors and maintain a personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ while working with children ages 7‑12.

Education and Work Experience
  • High School graduate, some college preferred
  • Must have summer camp counselor experience
  • Experience working with children required
  • Experience supervising others
  • Self‑motivation, good communication, and people skills are also necessary
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Good leadership skills
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to pass a child safety background check
  • Detail oriented and well organized
  • Knowledgeable in children/personnel safety, planning, problem solving, and crisis intervention
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure counselors conduct themselves appropriately and carry out their assigned duties
  • Hold mid‑week devotions with your counselors
  • Ensure counselors are holding adequate nightly devotions with their campers
  • Provide mentorship and assist counselors when issues arise
  • Meet with your counselors frequently to disseminate information, provide feedback, and debrief camping sessions
  • Maintain open lines of communication with counselors and supervisors, acting as intermediary between program staff and your counselors
  • Correct inappropriate behavior and remind counselors of the correct approach; report on counselor’s unwillingness to correct unsafe or inappropriate behavior
  • Fulfill counselor duties in the absence of a counselor or as required by program needs
  • Ensure the night watch is being done properly
  • Work actively with program staff to quickly resolve any issues of concern
General Duties
  • Exhibit effective Christ‑like conduct and service as an appropriate example for campers and staff
  • Give support to the total camping program, performing all other duties required to provide a consistently excellent program
  • Attend and participate in all camp programs as required, including evening programs, chapel activities, and staff meetings
  • Follow all policies and procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in your personal and living quarters
  • Assist with cleanup of the camp at the end of the teaching session and at the conclusion of the summer
Physical Requirements
  • Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Grasp, push, pull objects, and reach overhead
  • Operate a telephone and computer
  • Lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Understand verbal and written information
  • Sweep, clean and perform other janitorial tasks as needed
