Overview
The Theatre Instructor - Acting/Directing/Performance Emphasis - Non-Tenure - Spokane Falls Community College role includes teaching theatre courses, contributing to program development, recruitment/outreach, and department/college collaboration while upholding SFCC’s commitment to equity and diversity.
Responsibilities- Demonstrate commitment to serving a socially and culturally diverse student population, promoting equity, and preparing students to live responsibly in an increasingly global civilization.
- Prepare for and instruct courses in theatre (DRAMA) through in-person, hybrid, flex, and online modalities, as appropriate to program needs. Courses may include (but not limited to):
- Introduction to Theatre
- Theatre Production (directing 1-2 live theatre productions / year)
- Including collaboration w/ Digital Filmmaking and Music programs in alternating years for drama program productions.
- Basics of Acting 1 and 2
- Acting for Film and Television
- Directing for Stage and Screen
- Other theatre course as appropriate
- Introduction to Humanities
- Lead recruitment and outreach efforts to strengthen enrollment and public recognition of SFCC’s theatre program.
- Participate actively in the annual season selection committee.
- Train and assist in the academic advising of theatre program students.
- Assist the Director of Drama in program development efforts.
- Utilize equity-minded practices in the development of course syllabi, assessments, and materials supporting the instructional process.
- Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback.
- Provide availability and accessibility to students for the purpose of academic advising/consulting and support, through a combination of scheduled office hours, email accessibility or other effective means of responsive communication.
- Work collaboratively with diverse colleagues and community members.
- Participate in program, department, division, and college councils or committees; participate in meetings and professional development activities.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the community college mission and values and how SFCC advances them.
- Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities, and follow established procedures in administrative processes.
- In addition, faculty may:
- Advise student clubs or associations.
- Train for and teach First Year Experience classes (FYE 105).
- Participate in events promoting intercultural awareness, diversity, and equity.
- Instruct courses in related disciplines based upon qualifications.
- Advocate for Drama and Theatre and/or CAML on campus and in the community.
- An earned Master’s degree in Theatre, Drama or a closely aligned field from an accredited institution.
- Previous experience teaching live theatre performance techniques equivalent to one academic year.
- Background or experience with live theatre production.
- Demonstrated teaching experience with various modalities (online, on ground, hybrid/flex).
- Commitment to fostering a teaching, learning, and working environment that honors diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
- Commitment to promoting the welfare and best interests of students.
- Ability to articulate the community college mission and values and how SFCC advances them.
- Ability to perform duties in compliance with laws, regulations, and institutional goals.
The following competencies are not necessary for application, but evidence of one or more could increase a candidate’s success:
- An earned MFA or Ph.D in Theatre from an accredited institution by the beginning of the initial contract.
- Experience teaching acting, directing live theatre productions, and/or acting and directing for stage or screen.
- 2+ years’ experience as actor/director in professional or community theatre.
- Training related to theatre from non-dominant/non-western perspectives.
- Curriculum design and development that is innovative, equity-minded, and engaging using instructional technology.
- Two or more years of college-level instruction in Theatre or related fields.
- Experience working with historically underrepresented populations within theatre.
