Position Summary

Title:

Lecturer – Music and Director of Bands (100% Special Faculty/Lecturer) Department:
Fine and Performing Arts, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Location:

Cheney, WA Anticipated

Start Date:

Mid-September 2026 Academic Year: 2026‑2027 Salary: $53,629

Teaching Responsibilities

Typical workload: 45 credits per academic year. Release time for service is negotiable.

  • Direct the EWU Wind Ensemble
  • Direct the EWU Marching Band (additional stipend)
  • Direct Code Red (athletic pep band)
  • Teach courses in music theory, counterpoint, advanced analysis, conducting, instrumental methods, and applied lessons as appropriate
  • Meet all scheduled classes, plan and inform students of course content, schedule office hours, and submit grades per guidelines
  • Facilitate the annual EWU Band Invitational Clinic
  • Coordinate wind/brass/percussion auditions
  • Lead the WMEA chapter and related activities
  • Support recruitment initiatives with regional high‑school band programs, festivals, and events
Additional Activities
  • Community engagement and contribution to the department’s academic mission through teaching, mentorship, and creative scholarship
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in music education, band conducting, or a related field
  • Evidence of successful experience directing advanced band programs and a commitment to undergraduate teaching and liberal arts education
  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching instrumental methods, conducting, music theory, and applied teaching
  • Experience directing marching band and athletic pep bands
  • Evidence of excellence in communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to fostering a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that supports the universal access needs of students, faculty, staff, and the public
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Music (ABD considered)
  • Three or more years of collegiate band instruction experience
  • Evidence of recruiting/building a program
  • Collegiate instruction experience in trombone, trumpet, tuba/euphonium, jazz guitar, jazz bass, or French horn
  • Willingness to host on‑campus high school band competitions/clinics and camps
Conditions of Employment

Required start date:
September 16, 2026. Applicants must be able to start no later than mid‑September 2026. The offer is contingent upon a successful background check and proof of immunization to MMR. The institution does not sponsor visas. All new employees must complete required training via Canvas and may be invited to participate in workplace belonging training.

Physical Demands

Walking, arm movement. Hearing protection, cold‑weather clothing may be required. University, local, regional, and state mandates for public and personal protection should be followed as needed.
