Job Summary
We are seeking an Academic Advisor for the McNair Program who will counsel students through the graduate school application process, provide writing instruction, and coordinate virtual events to prepare scholars for success at the PhD level. The Advisor will also assist in recruitment, retention, and program promotion, maintain the McNair website, and help students navigate university requests, interviews, and funding offers.
Responsibilities- Assist students in academic preparation for graduate school using culturally competent and anti‑racist strategies.
- Guide research projects and coordinate with faculty and students.
- Develop, facilitate, and evaluate virtual and in‑person events such as panels, keynote talks, research presentations, and networking opportunities.
- Teach seminars on writing, research, and graduate application documents.
- Assist in recruitment and retention of scholars in collaboration with campus departments, community colleges, and community organizations.
- Develop program documents, correspondence, and promotional materials; maintain the McNair website.
- Plan and implement day‑to‑day services of the McNair Scholar Program.
- Collaborate with director, faculty, and staff to stay current on best practices for first‑generation, low‑income, and under‑represented students.
- Master’s degree.
- Experience in academic coaching, academic advising, counseling, or a related field with groups and/or individuals.
- Understanding of the graduate school application process and experience advising at the college level.
- Strong knowledge of social justice issues and ability to incorporate that understanding into recruiting and preparing McNair participants.
- Excellent academic/technical writing skills.
- Desire to teach/instruct in program seminars.
- Understanding of research writing components.
- Experience working with undergraduates who are low‑income, first‑generation, and from under‑represented groups.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with scholars, staff, faculty mentors, and work‑study students using a culturally competent, anti‑racist, holistic approach.
- General knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that supports universal access for students, faculty, staff, and the public.
In addition to the salary range of $47,572 to $57,099, EWU offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance, disability insurance, and retirement plans.
