Salary: $52,465 to $110,662 per year

Primary Purpose

Under the direction of the school principal, the special education teacher plans and provides learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for creating a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction for students with disabilities, enabling them to benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible, supported by supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports.

Essential

Functions
  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory‑ and perceptual‑motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi‑sensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and meet varying needs and interests.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by students’ IEPs, employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
  • Administer first aid and assist medically fragile children under supervision.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based on instructional techniques and technology.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures to maintain a conducive learning environment.
  • Meet with parents to discuss progress and determine priorities and educational needs.
  • Collaborate with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs promoting educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
  • Maintain accurate student records and prepare reports as required by law, district policy, and regulation.
  • Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects and communicate them to students.
  • Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow‑up of students in inclusive classrooms.
  • Direct para‑educators and volunteers to provide an effective classroom program.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Assist in collecting data for appropriate classroom interventions.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Assist in preparing data for local, state, and federal reports.
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
  • Conduct required state testing for students.
Other Functions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
Working Conditions

The daily work is performed in an office/classroom setting and at various sites within the district. The incumbent may be required to stand or sit for prolonged periods, be exposed to computer terminals, meet external deadlines, and occasionally handle infectious diseases and upset individuals.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education.
  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate with special education endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work with students of diverse academic and behavioral needs.
  • Experience with alternative settings.
  • Ability to create a positive learning environment and challenge students academically.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and language differences.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and database software on both Macintosh and PC.

Licenses and Special Requirements

  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate with a Special Education endorsement.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license or photo .
  • Social Security Card.
  • WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
