Job Summary
Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels. Educate students by planning, developing, and delivering a course of study according to student learning objectives, district/building curriculum guidelines, and student assessment data.
EssentialFunctions
- Implement the educational program, comprehensive related services and accommodations, and modifications as outlined in the student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Implement a positive educational approach by providing a safe, positive, and effective environment that reflects and facilitates learning.
- Implement a multi-tiered system of support for behavior within the classroom and school.
- Work cooperatively with others in achieving common goals and supporting Professional Learning Communities.
- Monitor the implementation of IEPs, including school-wide implementation of modification/accommodations and progress toward goals and objectives.
- Act as a case manager for the IEP, partnering with parents and working closely with the building team.
- Develop, implement, and review the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and related services, accommodations, and modifications as required by state and federal law for students who qualify for special education services. This includes writing goals and objectives for identified needs using standardized and classroom-based assessment data.
- Utilize para educators as part of a team by providing training, management, direction, and support.
- Perform teaching responsibilities and accountability procedures as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Special Education Law.
- Develop, implement, and support effective lesson plans and instructional materials that allow students to utilize and practice higher-level thinking skills.
- Design engaging activities, skills teaching, and differentiated lessons so that all students may access the curriculum and benefit from the educational experience.
- Provide for large and small group and individualized instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all intervention strategies and techniques including communicating information on student progress.
- Observe and evaluate student's performance and development and provide appropriate feedback on work utilizing methods such as assigning and grading classwork, homework, tests, and assignments.
- Continually assess student progress, and implement effective lessons to meet individual student learning needs as determined by student assessment data.
- Progress monitor using approved, research-based tools for each goal area and report progress as required by law and district expectations and as stated in the students’ IEPs.
- Provide opportunities for students to self-reflect and track progress toward learning goals.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of student's progress and development.
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures in accordance with the policies and procedures of the school building and the district.
- Work as an effective member of the grade level/course team to evaluate and improve student learning.
- Communicate effectively with a variety of audiences including communicating student progress in a timely and professional manner.
- Provide and/or arrange for the successful transition of students to multiple general education settings.
- Provide wrap-around services and supports to students and families.
- Facilitate and assist school staff in the systematic use of crisis intervention strategies and techniques, including crisis cycle, de-escalation, emergency response, escorting, and restraint.
