Job Summary: The Head Cross Country Coach works under the direct supervision of the Middle School Activities Coordinator and the Building Principal. The coach is expected to provide leadership and to plan, organize, and be responsible for the middle school cross country team, and to carry out the objectives of the school athletic program. Middle school level coaches are expected to have had previous successful coaching experience in the sport.
Qualified candidates should possess strong communication, organizational, motivational, teaching, and coaching skills. This person should be a person of high character and values that will set a positive example for all students in the East Valley School District.
This position does NOT include a teaching position in the District.
Essential Job Functions- Teach the fundamentals of cross country.
- Teach appreciation of rules and regulations, care of equipment and facilities, fair play, respect for others, personal hygiene, and safety.
- Hold necessary practices to prepare players for competition.
- Maintain documentation to fulfill state and district requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Monitor and ensure scholastic eligibility of players.
- Conduct duties in an ethical and professional manner, model behavior during practices and games; model required discipline and ethical behavior for players.
- Maintain good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, etc.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff, and school administration.
- Serve as a positive role model for students, coaching staff, and the community.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high school athletics.
- Relate to and motivate student athletes of varying abilities, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
- Responsible for the supervision of all students under their care.
- Report injuries to administration in a timely manner and ensure a coach accompanies any injured player who requires medical attention.
- Build and sustain a successful program that garners financial and community support and is respected by the East Valley School District and community at large.
- Availability to coach during vacation periods; some evening and weekend work will be required.
- Assist the activities coordinator and principal in hiring and/or retention of head coaches.
- Ensure that all players are properly and safely equipped for their sport.
- Assist in upholding and enforcing school district rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Use multiple communication systems, such as electronic mail and computers.
- Inspect school or district facilities to ensure the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and identify necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
- Maintain a consistent presence at the assigned work site(s) and work the regular work hours as specified by the contract.
- Professionally interact with colleagues, members of the public, and students.
- Comply with all district policies and all applicable laws.
- Perform special assignments and other duties as assigned or required by the supervisor.
- Demonstrate knowledge of fundamentals of the game/sport, practice organization, rules, safety, and game management.
- Organize and supervise a team program.
- Demonstrate skills to coaches and athletes.
- Communicate positively with students, parents, staff, community, and media.
- Motivate a variety of individual personalities toward a successful and positive learning/playing experience.
- Analyze the game and create appropriate training sessions that reflect observations.
- Allow involvement and decision-making of players and student participants to the appropriate degree.
- Encourage and recognize positive conduct at student activities.
- Model sportsmanlike conduct in dealing with officials and opponents regardless of circumstances.
