Job DescriptionJob Summary: This position assists a certificated teacher or other staff member with instructional and non‑instructional activities for students in a classroom. Responsibilities include tutoring students, monitoring student behavior, and preparing classroom materials. Additionally, this position ensures student safety by supervising and facilitating activities.
Responsibilities vary with individual assignment but typically include student supervision and maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in all common areas of the school. Duties may also include clerical work, providing basic first aid, or supervising students on the playground.
Essential Functions- Provide basic student supervision ensuring all students meet general building‑wide behavioral expectations, including lunch, bus, and crosswalk supervision.
- Assist in maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in common areas such as cafeteria, playground, corridors, study halls, gymnasium, auditorium, locker rooms, parking lots, crosswalks, detention rooms, and school buses.
- Provide instructional support in small or large group situations.
- Assist teachers with instruction, observing, recording data, charting behavior, and classroom preparation.
- Follow and implement plans and procedures directed by an administrator or certificated staff.
- Use appropriate instructional strategies when working with students.
- Interact respectfully with children, families, and colleagues.
- Complete mandatory training annually.
- Follow district policies for protecting children’s health, safety, and well‑being.
- Adhere to school protocols for behavior management.
- Maintain punctuality and reliability, notifying supervisors of absences.
- Model expected behaviors such as honesty, loyalty, dependability, integrity, and willingness to learn.
- Demonstrate respect for cultural diversity and individuality.
- Refer concerns to teachers or administrators.
- Refrain from discriminatory practices.
- Respect privacy and dignity of students and staff.
- Establish positive relationships with teachers, colleagues, and district staff.
- Take responsibility for learning and development.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Build caring relationships with students.
- Work cooperatively and respectfully with the school community.
- Perform basic computer tasks.
- Remain flexible to assignment changes.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Provide first aid as needed and report accidents.
- Perform duties directed by the building principal.
Education/Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
Para educators must be highly qualified upon hire into a continuing position as defined by state law:
- Completed at least 2 years of study totaling 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college.
- Obtained an associate degree or higher.
- Passed the ETS Para Pro Praxis Assessment with a qualifying score of at least 455.
- Passed the Master Teacher Assessments with a qualifying score of at least 65% on both assessments.
- Passed the Pearson Paraprofessional assessment with a qualifying score of at least 500.
- Completed a registered apprenticeship program.
- Effective communication with staff, students, and as a team member.
- Warm and confident approach with students.
- Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
The physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, kneeling, ducking, and fine finger dexterity. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
Terms of Employment and SalarySalary range: $19.25 – $22.27 per hour, step 1 placement. A typical school year consists of 180 days plus holidays.
