Position: PARA EDUCATOR - CIP (ONE OR MORE) @ SALK MIDDLE SCHOOL, 7 HRS, CONT.

Comprehensive Intervention (CI) Para educator

This position is in the Special Design Program and Paraeducators may be reassigned during the year based on student enrollment or other factors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate agility; ability to kneel, transfer, and lift students; provide toileting care (including diapering).
  • Feed students using G-tube, suctioning, and follow medication protocols.
  • Understanding of severe and profound intellectual and physical disabilities.
  • Follow multiple service care plans (e.g., BIPs, OT, PT, Health Care Plans).
  • Follow PT lifting and transferring directives; safely use mobility and positioning equipment.
  • Learn to use Assistive Technology devices (communication devices, computers, technology).
  • Implement individualized instructional and sensory plans.
  • Support communication needs (AAC devices, communication boards).
  • Maintain safety and health documentation as directed.
  • Collect and record student data as directed by the teacher or specialist to support progress monitoring and decision-making.

Benefits--Medical/Dental/Vision through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) are provided for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Additional benefits may include vacation, sick, personal days, and paid holidays. Often, positions have additional pay provisions above what is represented on the salary schedule, all in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) as negotiated.

Salary: LEVEL 35 on the Para educator (formerly Instructional Assistant) Salary Schedule. Experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar permanent position within a Washington State public school or another state's public school.

Qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  • Must provide high school diploma (or equivalent) AND 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college, AA or BA degree, OR pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  • Must complete Core Competencies within one year if hired into a Para educator position (refer to the ESS Collective Bargaining Agreement).
  • Demonstrated interest in working with students with a broad range of disabilities.
  • One year of successful work experience, training, or school district experience with students or adults with disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors.
  • Have successfully completed or be willing to complete the District de-escalation/soft restraint training. Must demonstrate initial competency level as measured by instructor observation.
  • Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending, and working or sitting on the floor with students; running after students, based on student needs.
  • Provide personal care assistance to students including, but not limited to, feeding, tube feeding (with training), toileting and diapering, based on student needs. Must pass the District strength and agility screening test, when necessary and based on student needs.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Heavier lifting will utilize a two-person lift or assistive devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a positive, professional, and confidential manner.
  • Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, carry out routines, and implement interventions as directed by certificated staff or supervisors.
  • Basic computer skills required.
