Visiting Assistant Professor Position Summary

Whitworth University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the School Counseling program. This faculty role is central to preparing graduate students for impactful and ethical practice in K–12 school counseling settings.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, a commitment to student mentorship, and active engagement in program development and accreditation. As a member of a collaborative academic community, the faculty member will contribute to Whitworth's mission of faith, excellence, and service, integrating these values into teaching, scholarship, and service.

We are seeking a dynamic and student-centered professional who values collaboration, strives for teaching excellence, and is committed to the growth and success of the School Counseling program. Contract dates:
July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.

Core Responsibilities

The Visiting Assistant Professor will carry a teaching load of 21 credits per academic year and will:

  • Design and deliver engaging, student-centered graduate courses in school counseling
  • Develop course syllabi, assignments, and assessments aligned with program outcomes
  • Utilize the university's learning management system and instructional technologies effectively
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on student work

In addition, the faculty member will:

  • Advise and mentor graduate students
  • Maintain regular office hours and support student success
  • Assist in coordinating and supporting student field placements

Program and Institutional Contributions:

  • Collaborate with faculty to assess and enhance curriculum
  • Support accreditation efforts (e.g., CACREP) through documentation and continuous improvement
  • Participate in departmental, school, and university meetings and assessment activities
  • Engage in service to the program, university, and profession consistent with faculty expectations

Other duties may be assigned by the Director of the School Counseling Program.

Qualifications and Core Competencies
  • Earned terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Counselor Education from an accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered for the rank of Instructor if the degree is conferred by summer 2027. Preference for graduates of CACREP-accredited programs
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the graduate or undergraduate level
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Commitment to Whitworth University's mission as a Christian liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church

Preferred:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of K–12 school counseling experience
  • Eligibility for school counseling certification in Washington State
  • Experience with data-informed decision-making in educational settings
  • Evidence of leadership in school counseling practice or programs
  • Ongoing engagement with current professional literature in school counseling
  • Active membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., ASCA, ACA)
