The Para educator (Special Education) provides support and assistance in meeting instructional, educational, behavioral, and social‑emotional needs of students receiving special education services. Duties may vary based on specific assignments and change as required by administrators or teachers.
Essential Functions- Supports teachers in meeting instructional, educational, behavioral, and social emotional needs of students with disabilities.
- Provides instructional support and assistance in teaching and learning, reinforcing learning objectives, in small or large group settings.
- Assists teachers with duties related to instruction such as observing, recording data, charting behaviors, and classroom preparation.
- Follows and implements plans, procedures, strategies, or tasks directed by administrators or certificated staff.
- Adheres to district and local governing agency policies for protecting the health, safety, and well‑being of children.
- Assists in maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in common areas (cafeteria, playground, corridors, study halls, gymnasium, auditorium, locker rooms, parking lots, crosswalks, detention rooms, school buses).
- Understands and utilizes behavior management plans of classrooms, buildings, and supported programs.
- Assists staff with crisis intervention following a student’s individual behavior plan or ERP as written by the IEP team.
- Provides any information requested by teachers/administrators for development of the IEP.
- Works collaboratively with the Special Education teacher, classroom teachers, and other para educators.
- Assists in preparing materials designated in the lesson plan.
- Applies appropriate strategies when working with students in instructional settings.
- Demonstrates interest in working with students, including those with special needs.
- Encourages and models expected behavior, demonstrates sensitivity and respect for diversity.
- Fades supports to individual students as directed and documents fade progress per each student’s IEP.
- Builds and maintains a positive, caring relationship with all students.
- Provides personal care when required, such as toilet/diaper and feed students, tube feeding and catheterization.
- Works cooperatively and respectfully with all members of the school community.
- Communicates with Special Education teachers regarding student progress.
- Performs basic computer skills such as word processing and email.
- Reports to assigned duty areas promptly and reliably.
- Stays flexible to changes in assignments or situations.
- Works independently with minimal supervision.
- Provides first aid in case of illness and/or injury and reports accidents to the building office.
- Completes the fundamental course of study and mandatory training annually as required.
- Performs other duties as directed by the building principal.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain promptly.
Para educators shall be required to be highly qualified upon hire into a continuing position as defined by state law.
Additional Qualifications- Completed at least 2 years of study totaling 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university; or
- Obtained an associate or higher degree; or
- Completed and passed the ETS Para Pro Praxis Assessment (qualifying score of at least 455); or
- Completed and passed the Master Teacher Assessments (2 assessments, qualifying score of at least 65%); or
- Completed and passed the Pearson Paraprofessional assessment (qualifying score of at least).
- Completed an apprenticeship as a para educator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
- Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with all staff and students, both verbally and in writing.
