Monday – Friday
6 hours per day
9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Job Summary

The Para educator (Special Education) provides support and assistance in meeting the instructional, educational, behavioral, and social‑emotional needs of students receiving special education services. Duties may vary by assignment and can change with new instruction or program needs.

Essential Functions

  • Supports teachers in meeting the instructional, educational, behavioral, and social‑emotional needs of students with disabilities.
  • Provides instructional support and assistance in teaching and learning as needed in small or large group situations.
  • Assists teachers with duties such as observing, recording data, charting behavior, and classroom preparation.
  • Follows and implements plans, procedures, strategies, or tasks directed by an administrator or certificated staff.
  • Adheres to district and local policies for protecting health, safety, and well‑being of children.
  • Assists in maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in common school areas.
  • Understands and applies behavior‑management plans of classrooms, building, and programs.
  • Provides information requested by teachers or administrators for IEP development.
  • Prepares materials designated in lesson plans.
  • Assists with crisis intervention following a student’s behavior plan.
  • Works collaboratively with special education teachers, classroom teachers, and other para educators.
  • Communicates with special education teachers about questions and concerns related to students’ progress.
  • Applies strategies for working with students in instructional settings.
  • Demonstrates interest in working with students, including those with special needs.
  • Models expected behavior.
  • Fades supports to students per teacher direction and documents fading in students’ IEPs.
  • Collects data on student mastery of behavior goals using criteria/checklists developed by the special educator.
  • Builds and maintains a positive, caring relationship with all students.
  • Works cooperatively and respectfully with all school community members.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and respect for diversity among all members of the school community.
  • Maintains organized daily records.
  • Participates in training courses to enhance skills.
  • Performs basic computer tasks such as word processing and email.
  • Reports to assigned duty areas promptly and reliably.
  • Remains flexible to changes in assignments or situations.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision.
  • Provides first aid for illness or injury and reports accidents to the building office.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the building principal.

Education / Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current first‑aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain promptly.
  • Must meet state-law requirements for highly qualified para educators: (a) at least 2 years of study totaling 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher; (b) an associate’s or higher degree; (c) a qualifying score on the ETS Para Pro Praxis Assessment; (d) a qualifying score on the Master Teacher Assessments; (e) a qualifying score on the Pearson Paraprofessional assessment;

    or (f) completion of an apprenticeship in a registered program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication with staff and students.
  • Ability to work with students in a warm and confident manner.
  • Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Preferred: previous experience working with students with disabilities.

Physical Demands

Requires the ability to exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift or move objects up to 50 lbs unaided, and move over 50 lbs with assistance. Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, and use fine finger dexterity. Work occurs in environments that may expose employees to risk of injury and common infections.

Terms of Employment and Salary

Salary range: $19.13 to $22.16 per hour. Positions qualifying for the intensive care stipend earn an additional $2.00 per hour. Salary placement starts at step 1 unless noted otherwise.
